Sometimes I’m pretty sure my iPod is talking to me. Or singing to me. I know, it sounds crazy. And it’s not all of the time, but only when I decide to listen. It’s just that the shuffle function offers up uncanny selections.
This morning, I’m riding the subway and playing Solitaire. “Tear,” a Red Hot Chili Peppers’ song from their album By The Way, comes on and I hear, “I can see clearly now/That this is not a place/For playing solitaire.” Ok, then! Time to listen:
I hear the chorus lyrics:
All in all I’m
Loving every rise and fall
The sun will make and I will take
Breath to be sure of this
In the end
All will be forgiven when
Surrender rises high and I
Gave what I came to give
Say it now because you never know
This song makes me think about a lot of different things – appreciating each day, becoming more than you are, and seizing the moment before it’s too late.
Then, “Zoo Station” from U2’s Achtung Baby comes on. (Yes, I know my iPod music is ridiculously old). What I hear, from the first verse:
I’m ready
I’m ready for the laughing gas
I’m ready
I’m ready for what’s next
I’m ready to duck
I’m ready to dive
I’m ready to say
I’m glad to be alive
And from a later verse:
Time is a train
Makes the future the past
Leaves you standing in the station
Your face pressed up against the glass
My interpretation:
It’s time for change. The country has been crying out for political change. Many people around me have also been wanting to change things in their lives.
Change usually feels uncomfortable, even if we don’t like where we are. We forget that the past doesn’t equal the future. But this time, change will be a good thing and will feel right.
What the Internet says about the song:
From an Amazon.com review of By The Way:
But the biggest surprise is “Tear,” a masterful homage to the Beach Boys that suggests the Chili Peppers’ perpetual state of arrested development may someday lift.
Wikipedia on By The Way:
By the Way was applauded by critics as a departure from the band’s previous styles, and is recognized for the melodic and subdued emotions given by the Chili Peppers.
Wikipedia on “Zoo Station” and Achtung Baby:
“Zoo Station” is the opening track from the 1991 U2 album Achtung Baby. It opened all concerts save one in the Zoo TV Tour. It is one of the first U2 songs with an electronic music feel, including distorted vocals and guitars.
The song is optimistic and hopeful, reflecting the mood in Berlin (and around the world) in the early 1990s, after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of Communist regimes in the Soviet bloc.
“Zoo Station” was not released as a single, yet became a radio success in the United States, reaching the top spot on the mainstream rock charts and No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
What do you think - it time to make a change in your life? Does it feel like the right time?
