As children, all we want to do is grow up and be in charge of our own lives.
When my sister and I were kids, one of our favorite phrases was,
“you’re not the boss of me!” Actually, our parents were pretty much the bosses of us at the time. But the way we put that affirmation out into the universe was our way of being proactive with the power that we had.
Stephen Covey, author of the classic Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,
says that habit #1 is to be proactive. By growing yourself, becoming proactive and taking responsibility, you are more easily able to move in the direction of what you want.
Being proactive feels good. Besides doing what you think is the “right” thing to do, you know that when you’re taking responsibility, you’re moving closer to achieving your goals. When you’ve trained 2 more times per week than you used to, you know that you’re more likely to finish the race with a faster time. When you pass on the slice of chocolate cake, you’re that much closer to feeling awesome when you fit into your skinny jeans. When you wake
up early to write a scene of your screenplay, you know that you’re that much closer to seeing it on the screen in your local movie theater.
Are you getting what you want? If not, ask yourself if you’ve been proactive about going for it. If you don’t like the results that you’re getting, it is your responsibility to make changes to do things differently. Others will help you along the way, and you’ll be given opportunities that will help you move closer to your goal, but you must act – and be proactive – to get you there.
