Spring cleansing feels great

cleanse, events

Date 23rd May 2009   Comments No Comments »

The May spring cleanse ended yesterday, and I’m so excited about the great results that my clients had:

  • One person’s breathing is so much better – allergies are hardly bothering him at all
  • Another person no longer craves sugar and sweets
  • Someone else feels more energized than she has in a long time
  • Most people found the cooking easy and enjoyable
  • Almost everyone liked the recipes, too

And lest you think you’re too healthy to do a cleanse, let me tell you what this health coach experienced (as I did this cleanse along with my class):

  • I am more energized and alert
  • My skin looks great
  • I’ve lost a few pounds and my clothes are fitting better
  • My moods are more steady
  • I have no more cravings for sweets

If you have any questions about how it works, don’t hesitate to contact me – I’ll be happy to give you all the details.

Springing into spring

career, cleanse, diet, environment, exercise, happiness, self care

Date 20th Mar 2009   Comments No Comments »

Happy first day of Spring! You wouldn’t know it was spring in New York, though, where we woke up to flurries and dark skies. But at least the forecast is good for the rest of the weekend.

I’m excited because spring is the beginning of new growth and warmer weather. It’s also the perfect time to think about changing up your routine and doing things differently. If you want to get started on new projects… create new enterprises… get more active and get out more into the world… now is the time to wake up from the winter slumber.

The best way I know how to start making things happen is to do a holistic spring cleanse.

I start with my diet by incorporating more spring foods in it – leafy greens, lighter proteins, and less fat. By eating this way, my energy becomes lighter and more vibrant.

Once I start clearing out old physical energy and shedding any winter excess, I move into clearing out different areas of my life – physically cleaning out my closet or getting rid of clutter in my office. Or changing up my exercise routine. Or making plans with friends that I haven’t seen in a while.

Then I can put more energy into new creative projects now that I’ve released old energy.

Would you like to try it, too? I have two cleanse classes coming up very soon.

Stress is already graying Obama

cleanse, environment, news, self care

Date 5th Mar 2009   Comments No Comments »

Though he has only been President for 44 days, Obama’s hair is already starting to gray. According to Real Age’s Dr. Roizen, Presidents age two years for each year in office.

I have to imagine that with everything Obama is dealing with – two wars, the tanking economy, and everything else that’s happening – that he’s probably aging more like 4 or 5 years for each year in office at this rate.

How do you slow down the aging process? Obviously, less stress is key. But there are a few other things you can do, too:

  1. Eat more antioxidant-rich foods
  2. Get more sleep
  3. Exercise and do weight-bearing activity to keep bones/muscles strong
  4. Laugh more and cultivate a positive attitude
  5. Take time to do seasonal cleanses

Renew and revitalize with a cleanse

cleanse, food, mindfulness, self care

Date 29th Dec 2008   Comments No Comments »

If you feel like you’ve had too much to eat over the holidays, it’s fine to take a break from eating. As long as you have no serious medical problems that would prohibit you from doing so, taking a day or two to cleanse your body with a fast is a healthy way to give your body a rest from processing large amounts of heavy foods, sugary treats, and strong alcoholic and caffeinated beverages.

If you have truly overindulged, you may want to do a pre-cleanse before you cleanse. You can take a few days or more to eat low-fat meals – consisting of light foods such as steamed vegetables, whole cooked grains, lean proteins, and fresh fruit – and cut out alcohol and coffee. Pre-cleansing will make your cleanse that much easier because you will likely not experience the more extreme symptoms of cleansing and detoxification – headaches, flu-like symptoms, and generally feeling ill – since your body will have already started discharging toxins.

If you are interested in doing a guided cleanse, contact me for details.

Recipe: Fall Cleanse Kichadi

cleanse, food, self care

Date 18th Nov 2008   Comments No Comments »

We had a very successful cleanse class at the beginning of the month. The fall foods included in the cleanse help tone your lungs and intestines and prepare your body for the cold winter months. This is just one of many delicious dishes we ate. This dish is also perfect for helping protect your body from the common cold – the spices are warming, and the vegetables provide the vitamins and nutrients you need to strengthen your system against nasty cold viruses.

Want to try the cleanse? Click here to learn about the last one for this year.

Notes: This dish is an Indian cleansing specialty. When you combine it with a whole grain (brown rice, millet, quinoa, etc.) it becomes a complete meal. The good thing about this dish is that you can make a big pot of it and eat it over a few days. It can take a little longer to cook, but if you’re in the house working on other things, you can prepare it and let it simmer while you work.

Substitutes – you can also make this with other types of beans if you don’t have split mung beans. Chickpeas would probably work well, too – though they take longer to cook if you’re cooking them from dried beans.

½ cup split mung beans
2 medium sweet potatoes, diced
1 stick kombu (kelp)
6 cups water
1 tablespoon ghee (clarified butter) or oil
1 teaspoon cumin
1/8 teaspoon hing (omit if you don’t have an Indian grocery store nearby)
1 teaspoon coriander
¼ teaspoon cardamom
½ teaspoon black pepper
2 more tablespoons ghee (clarified butter) or oil
¾ teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon turmeric
¾ teaspoon salt
½ small onion, chopped
1-2 cloves garlic
½ teaspoon ground cumin
2-4 cups fresh vegetables
2 more cups water as needed

Wash the beans and rinse until water is clear. Warm a tablespoon of ghee in a medium sauce pan and add whole cumin seeds and hing and lightly brown. Add beans, 4 cups water and bring to a boil. Cook for about 45 minutes.

Warm other 2 tablespoons ghee in a small skillet. Add coriander, cardamom, peppercorns, and sauté for 2-3 minutes. Stir in the rest of the spices, onion, and garlic. Pour sautéed spice mixture into the beans. Add last 2 cups of water to the kichadi. Add the vegetables and cook for 20 more minutes.

How does cleansing work?

cleanse, food, self care

Date 7th Nov 2008   Comments No Comments »

One thing I want to clear up today is how cleanses work. Many people assume that the food that you eat when you’re on a cleanse diet is what does the cleansing. This is a misunderstanding. What actually happens is that your body does the cleansing on its own. The foods are cleansing because they support your body with the right nutrients, vitamins and minerals, and are generally lighter and easier to process. Because your digestive system does not have to work hard to digest them or make them whole, your body is able to process them effectively and also release waste that has been stored in your system.

This week, I’m leading a group through a fall cleanse class. It’s going extraordinarily well for everyone. I’m doing it, too, and I feel better than ever – and I’m a health coach!

I find that many people enjoy them right before or around the holidays because it helps them stay on track with their health goals. It can also help alleviate allergies and prevent minor illnesses like colds. If you’d like to try cleansing, I’m planning on offering one more this year – just sign up and I’ll be sure to let you know when it’s happening.

Milk thistle: a head ache cure?

cleanse, food

Date 16th Jul 2008   Comments No Comments »

Many visitors to this blog arrive via my newsletter or through a news feed. But some end up here through a search engine keyword result. So, to answer one of those questions, I’ve decided to write about milk thistle and head aches: specifically, does milk thistle cure head aches?

First of all, what is milk thistle?

From the Mayo Clinic Website:

Milk thistle has been used medicinally for over 2,000 years, most commonly for the treatment of liver and gallbladder disorders. A flavonoid complex called silymarin can be extracted from the seeds of milk thistle and is believed to be the biologically active component. The terms “milk thistle” and “silymarin” are often used interchangeably.

Milk thistle is an herbal extract that usually comes in a liquid form. It is typically used to help rejuvenate an overextended liver. The liver can become weakened from diseases, overindulgence in rich foods, alcohol, prescription and recreational drugs.

The liver is one of the main organs of digestion and helps filter waste out of the body and nutrients into the body. When the liver is weak and unable to perform its job to peak capacity, the immune system can also become weakened – more impurities in the system means more work for the immune system which leads to an overtaxed immune system.

So, can milk thistle help headaches? Well, maybe not most of them. But one type that it may be able to help is the migraine.

Migraine headaches may be triggered by many different things, including allergic reactions and sensitivities to foods or beverages containing nitrates, MSG, artificial sweeteners, caffeine, or alcohol. Now, if you’re willing to experiment with your diet by eating cleaner food (e.g., by cutting out foods that don’t trigger congestion, allergic reactions, or make you feel sluggish), doing a diet detox or cleanse, and adding in supplements such as milk thistle to heal the liver and strengthen your digestive system, it may help you decrease or eliminate your migraine headaches.

You can also supplement with milk thistle during a cleanse and detox diet. The milk thistle can help you strengthen your liver as you cleanse your whole digestive system. By adding more fiber to your diet while you clean it up, cutting back on heavy foods such as meats, cheese, refined flour products, caffeine and alcohol, while adding in more greens, fruits, whole grains, and legumes, you may gain more energy, have healthier-looking skin and hair, and start shedding pounds.
