Springing into spring

career, cleanse, diet, environment, exercise, happiness, self care

Date 20th Mar 2009   Comments No Comments »

Happy first day of Spring! You wouldn’t know it was spring in New York, though, where we woke up to flurries and dark skies. But at least the forecast is good for the rest of the weekend.

I’m excited because spring is the beginning of new growth and warmer weather. It’s also the perfect time to think about changing up your routine and doing things differently. If you want to get started on new projects… create new enterprises… get more active and get out more into the world… now is the time to wake up from the winter slumber.

The best way I know how to start making things happen is to do a holistic spring cleanse.

I start with my diet by incorporating more spring foods in it – leafy greens, lighter proteins, and less fat. By eating this way, my energy becomes lighter and more vibrant.

Once I start clearing out old physical energy and shedding any winter excess, I move into clearing out different areas of my life – physically cleaning out my closet or getting rid of clutter in my office. Or changing up my exercise routine. Or making plans with friends that I haven’t seen in a while.

Then I can put more energy into new creative projects now that I’ve released old energy.

Would you like to try it, too? I have two cleanse classes coming up very soon.

Sign up for the March 27 – April 2 cleanse – Hurry, teleclass is Tuesday March 24!

Sign up for the April 17 – April 23 cleanse – teleclass is Tuesday, April 14

Date 10th Mar 2009   Comments No Comments »

There’s lots of stories out in the ol’ www. Here’s a short round up of a few that interested me so far this week:

Are bagels healthy? – Short answer: No

Living paycheck to paycheck – Want to break out of this cycle? Read this article and see if you start thinking differently.

Are you a binge eater? Or exercise addict? – Yes, exercise can be an addiction, too – and it’s linked with Bulemia. This site gives some great information about both these and other eating disorders.

What produce have the least (and most) pesticides? – From the Environmental Working Group, the results of their latest survey on pesticides found on fruits and vegetables.

Stress is already graying Obama

cleanse, environment, news, self care

Date 5th Mar 2009   Comments No Comments »

Though he has only been President for 44 days, Obama’s hair is already starting to gray. According to Real Age’s Dr. Roizen, Presidents age two years for each year in office.

I have to imagine that with everything Obama is dealing with – two wars, the tanking economy, and everything else that’s happening – that he’s probably aging more like 4 or 5 years for each year in office at this rate.

How do you slow down the aging process? Obviously, less stress is key. But there are a few other things you can do, too:

  1. Eat more antioxidant-rich foods
  2. Get more sleep
  3. Exercise and do weight-bearing activity to keep bones/muscles strong
  4. Laugh more and cultivate a positive attitude
  5. Take time to do seasonal cleanses

Delicious Life goes to the Garden Party

environment, food, inspiration

Date 28th Jan 2009   Comments No Comments »

I’ve been making raw sauerkraut for a while. When Garden Party invited me to post, I was excited to offer my recipe and some health tips. The philosophy of Garden Party is all about living a more green life. Lenny Williams is an expert party planner who does it with a fresh twist – she’s great at putting together greener events. From the food to the decor to the cleanup after the event, Lenny is great at taking your vision and coordinating it with venues and vendor offerings to make a fun, fabulous and eco-friendly event.

To green her own life, Lenny practices what she preaches. She makes things when she can instead of buying, recycles to minimize waste, and creates peace and balance in her life with yoga – she’s also a certified yoga teacher in private practice. Check out her site for more tips on how to be greener.

Clear clutter out for new energy

career, environment, fun, happiness, relationships, self care

Date 27th Dec 2008   Comments No Comments »

Want to get ready for the new year by bringing fresh energy into your life? Start by cleaning up a portion of your home.

Feng Shui is the art of creating harmonious flow in the house – making sure that the energy within is good and that no area gets stagnant. Each area of the home represents a different aspect of your life – career, family, children, love, money, etc. So if one area gets stagnant with clutter, it’s likely that area of your life is also stagnant.

Your cleanup doesn’t have to be a big project – you can do something as simple as cleaning off a bookshelf or organizing your desk. You might choose a corner of a room or your closet. Whatever it is, getting rid of clutter will help you reactivate that space and give it new life.

If you want to work on a particular aspect of your life, you could work with a Feng Shui consultant or get a simple Feng Shui book – I have not read this one yet but it looks good.

Help others with clothing donations

environment, self care

Date 26th Dec 2008   Comments No Comments »

Did you get a bunch of new clothes for Christmas or Chanuka? Why not donate some of your older clothes to the less fortunate?

By getting rid of clothes that no longer suit you or that you don’t love, you’re making room for new and better clothes that fit you and your life. Donating your clothes instead of throwing them away gives them a second life – it’s the green thing to do, and it’s helpful for those in need.

There are several places to drop off gently used goods. Some good places include:
Goodwill – US and Canada
St. Vincent De Paul – nationwide
Housing Works – NYC area

Also, you can get a tax deduction for 2008 if you donate your clothes before the new year.

Six creative and cheap ways to work out

diet, environment, exercise, fun, inspiration, self care

Date 30th Oct 2008   Comments No Comments »

Tired of your old gym routine? Or can’t afford your gym membership anymore?

Here are six creative, inexpensive workouts you can do to get in shape:

Cycling it off – Biking around town and commuting to work via bike can be especially challenging if you live in a city with a lot of traffic (like New York). But not only is it inexpensive, you’ll also save a ton of money on gas or train/bus fare.

Chop wood – A friend of mine who has a house out in the country chopped all of his firewood for the winter recently. He said he started out wearing several layers and a jacket. By the time he was done, he was down to his t-shirt and feeling great from all of the upper body work. He was also satisfied with the tangible results – the big pile of wood – that will save money on heating costs.

Portable yoga – Who says you have to be in a class or in front of a DVD to do yoga? Get creative with your downtime and carve out space to strike some yoga poses. Another friend likes to roll out the yoga mat  during airport layovers. He figures that if he’s going to be sitting around for 3 or 4 hours, why not do something fun and worthwhile with his time? Because he finds time to do his practice wherever he is, he works out almost every day and stays in terrific shape.

Home improvement – Scraping and sanding off old paint, applying fresh coats of paint, caulking doors and windows, installing cabinetry, building shelving – all of these home improvements can take a lot of energy and time. But once you’re done, you’ve had a good upper body workout and your home will look a lot better for it, too.

Workout for cash – Take up some part time or weekend physical labor – walk multiple dogs, mow lawns, shovel driveways, declutter garages or attics, or clean out gutters. You can do it for yourself or try to make some money off of your efforts. Either way, you’ll come out ahead because you’ll get your exercise and get chores done for you or others.

Workout for change – canvass neighborhoods for your favorite political candidate or cause. Go door to door and ask people to sign your petition. Raise money for charity by pledging to complete an endurance event for donations. You’ll raise awareness of the issues that matter most to you while you’re getting active.

7 ways to stay healthy without breaking your budget

environment, food, news, self care

Date 25th Jul 2008   Comments 2 Comments »

Has inflation hit you through your grocery bill? I’ve noticed recently that my food shopping has become much more expensive over the past few months. Here are some ways to cut costs without sacrificing your health:

1. Eat in season – If you’re buying fresh produce, it’s always better to eat whatever is available right now. Sure, you can get apples in spring or early summer, but they’re more expensive – and less fresh – than the seasonally-ready strawberries or blueberries.

2. Buy local – farmer’s markets often have comparable or better prices on certain items that you might find in your grocery story. By buying from the farmer’s markets, you’re supporting smaller businesses, helping the environment and getting fresher food (since the produce doesn’t travel as far).

3. Buy organic selectively – some conventionally-grown produce is so highly sprayed that you would be better off buying organic to avoid the massive amounts of pesticides you’d otherwise be consuming. For some other items, it’s not as crucial that you choose organic. See this article on MSNBC for more about which items should be organic.

4. Go veg – Eating vegetarian meals can save you a lot of money as veg sources of protein cost substantially less than animal products. If you’re opposed to becoming vegetarian full time, you can try it part time – plan to have some vegetarian meals during the week. You can get protein from plant sources such as tofu, tempeh, and beans.

5. Reduce your protein – If you are still adamant about keeping meat in your diet, use the Chinese Medicine philosophy of eating meat – eat mostly vegetables, with meat as a flavoring or condiment in your meal. One serving of chicken, beef or pork should only be 3 oz. This is much less than you’d get in a typical restaurant or takeout meal, but this is all you really need.

6. Eat less – It may sound drastic, but frequently we Americans are eating more than we actually need. Slow down your eating, and tune into your body. Do you really need the next bite? Or are you satisfied? If you’re hungry later, you can always have another small meal.

7. Fast – It sounds extreme, but a one-day fast will not only save you money, it can also help you live longer and healthier. Fasting allows your body to take a break from digesting all of the time, giving it the crucial rest it needs to renew and repair. But before you jump into fasting, you should get guidance from an experienced health coach or professional.

Birth Control Pills, Sunscreen and Local Eats

environment, food, news

Date 23rd Jul 2008   Comments No Comments »

So much health news, so little time. Here are a few articles from the headlines I’ve read recently that may be of interest:

Birth control pill risk: Are you on the pill? You might want to consider these possible side effects from long-term birth control use.

Sunscreen and cancer: Is your brand of sunscreen actually increasing your risk for certain cancers? Read more about the controversy.

Grow it yourself: Locally-grown food — grown by yourself or someone you hire to tend your garden — is suddenly the new fashion. Learn why
