I’m really excited to be on the Mind Over Matter radio show from 12 – 1 pm ET tomorrow – February 21. I’ll be talking about the common myths of healthy eating, the biggest mistakes people make when trying to get healthier, and my philosophy on food.
Joshua Margolis, the host of the show, is a fitness trainer who discusses how exercise is about the journey, not the destination. Like any other life-altering discipline, exercise is no exception. Joshua explains how to adopt exercise into your life with the goal of having it last a lifetime.

Sugar, How do thy damage my health? Let me count the ways…
I gave a free sugar blues teleclass on Monday night, and on it I mentioned several ways that sugar can hurt your body and your health. From an article that I found on Mercola.com, here’s an excerpt of just 15 ways out of over 75(!) that sugar can harm your health:
- Sugar can suppress your immune system and impair your defenses against infectious disease.
- Sugar upsets the mineral relationships in your body: causes chromium and copper deficiencies and interferes with absorption of calcium and magnesium.
- Sugar can cause can cause a rapid rise of adrenaline, hyperactivity, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and crankiness in children.
- Sugar can produce a significant rise in total cholesterol, triglycerides and bad cholesterol and a decrease in good cholesterol.
- Sugar causes a loss of tissue elasticity and function.
- Sugar feeds cancer cells and has been connected with the development of cancer of the breast, ovaries, prostate, rectum, pancreas, biliary tract, lung, gallbladder and stomach.
- Sugar can increase fasting levels of glucose and can cause reactive hypoglycemia.
- Sugar can weaken eyesight.
- Sugar can cause many problems with the gastrointestinal tract including: an acidic digestive tract, indigestion, malabsorption in patients with functional bowel disease, increased risk of Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis.
- Sugar can cause premature aging.
- Sugar can lead to alcoholism.
- Sugar can cause your saliva to become acidic, tooth decay, and periodontal disease.
- Sugar contributes to obesity.
- Sugar can cause autoimmune diseases such as: arthritis, asthma, multiple sclerosis.
- Sugar greatly assists the uncontrolled growth of Candida Albicans (yeast infections).

Blog action day: climate change

This year’s Blog Action Day topic is Climate Change. Here are some of my thoughts on how you can live a more sustainable life and help protect the environment. I made this speech a couple of years ago at my Toastmasters club:
I’ve been trying to get more green lately. I have been good about buying foods from local sources and carrying leftovers for lunch instead of getting convenience foods. I’m contemplating riding my bike to work, though it’s getting quite cold in New York.
What changes do you think you could make to help curb climate change?

Just announced – fall cleanse classes

Fall is here, and that means it’s time for the Fall Cleanse! For those of you who have never experienced the joy of fall cleansing, let me tell you a little bit about it.
Cleansing was one of the ways that I started getting into holistic healing. When I did my first cleanse a few years ago, I couldn’t believe how great I felt. Eating nourishing foods (my cleanses don’t require fasting), reflecting and taking extra special care of myself, I felt completely balanced and centered once I completed it. Once I learned how to keep myself healthy, life became more exciting and fun.
I landed a more lucrative job and that was more challenging but also fun. I fell in love with my then-boyfriend (now husband). And I got clear on what I wanted.
But don’t just listen to what I’m saying – see what other people thought of it.
If you’ve been feeling stuck or tired, want more energy or get rid of sugar cravings, I urge you to try one out. The first one starts October 13 – Just 2 weeks away.

How to keep cool in Summer

Finally, summer has arrived and it’s warm and sunny. We rise earlier and the sun will already be up. We spend more of our hours outdoors, with the sun rising high in the sky and beating down hotter than ever, setting even later in the day.
All of the heat, sun and warmth feel so good after a long rainy spring season. Overdoing it though can tax our systems – heat exhaustion, sunburn, heat stroke and hyponutremia are all common ailments from spending too many active hours in the hot sun.
You can easily counteract the warm, dry effects of summer by making a few simple changes:
Eat cooling foods – in Ayurveda, the ancient Indian holistic health system, cooling foods are those that have a cooling nature (not necessarily cold). The flavors that cool are sweet, bitter and astringent foods.
Sweet foods include summer fruits (peaches, plums, melons, berries, cherries, pears), coconuts, dates, and sweet rice pudding.
Some bitter foods include bitter melon and dark leafy greens like broccoli rabe and dandelion.
Astringent (drying) foods include beans, lentils, turmeric, cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower and cabbage and cilantro
Keep cool – stay out of the sun during the peak hours (10 am – 2 pm) or try to limit your sun exposure. If you exercise outside, try to do it in the early morning or evening if possible.
Drink cool (but not cold) liquids – we tend to lose more fluids in the heat of summer. Drinking cold water can help replenish them. But don’t drink ice cold water all of the time – this can put out your internal digestive fire. Opt for cold, but not iced, water instead.

Edible Garden – homegrown in NYC

It seems like everyone these days is talking about gardening and growing their own produce. After living in Brooklyn for a few years, we’ve finally started up an edible terrace garden that will give us patio tomatoes, arugula, peppers, leeks, and herbs.
If you’re not quite ready to start your own garden but want some inspiration, check out the New York Botanical Garden. This summer they’re having a summer-long festival that celebrates growing great food.
The Edible Garden presents programs to inspire you to grow, prepare and eat home-grown goodies. The celebration will have events that include celebrity chefs such as Lidia Bastianich and Emeril Lagasse, various exhibitions for the whole family, growing tips and recipes.
For more information, visit the Edible Garden site.

The May spring cleanse ended yesterday, and I’m so excited about the great results that my clients had:
- One person’s breathing is so much better – allergies are hardly bothering him at all
- Another person no longer craves sugar and sweets
- Someone else feels more energized than she has in a long time
- Most people found the cooking easy and enjoyable
- Almost everyone liked the recipes, too
And lest you think you’re too healthy to do a cleanse, let me tell you what this health coach experienced (as I did this cleanse along with my class):
- I am more energized and alert
- My skin looks great
- I’ve lost a few pounds and my clothes are fitting better
- My moods are more steady
- I have no more cravings for sweets
If you have any questions about how it works, don’t hesitate to contact me – I’ll be happy to give you all the details.

Shred your personal docs at Shred Fest in New York
Ever since I did some spring cleaning in my home office I’ve had a stack of personal documents waiting in a milk crate to be disposed of somehow. Since I don’t have my own shredder, they just sit and wait.
Happily, I’ll be able to ditch them and protect my identity at Shred Fest this Sunday. This free shredding day, courtesy of the Department of Consumer Affairs, the Mayor’s Office of the Criminal Justice Coordinator, Department of Parks and Recreation, and Department of Sanitation will be held at various locations in each of the 5 boroughs. To find the shredding place closest to you visit the nyc.gov site.

Ever since we’ve moved to Brooklyn 3 years ago, there’s been a cardboard box living on our bedroom floor. It remained unpacked and filled with stuff to go to the Salvation Army someday. Yesterday, it finally happened.
On Sunday, we dropped off about 40 lbs of our old stuff – used clothes, jackets, hats, ski pants and other assorted textiles that we had hanging around the house. The recycling program, run by the Council on the Environment of New York City, has drop-off stops at various farmers markets around New York for the remainder of the spring and summer. If you have a bunch of old stuff hanging around your house, I highly recommend taking it over to one of the drop-off points. If your clothes, sheets, towels, and other textiles are in good shape, they’ll go to help those in need. If not, they will be recycled, as opposed to ending up in the landfill if you just threw them out. And you can get a tax deduction for your donations.
Find more information about the clothing and textile recycling program in New York here.
