Blog Action Day 2008 – Fighting Poverty

Today is Blog Action Day and the topic for 2008 is poverty – quite appropriate with everything going on in the global markets. Yes, the stock markets are gyrating and people are losing their jobs. There’s a lot of fear and worry. Yet even though we see our savings dwindle and are nervous about what will happen tomorrow, we still don’t understand what the truly poor go through on a daily basis. Me included.
I just ate my first whole meal in over 24 hours. Right after my first few bites, I could feel my blood glucose level rise – my energy levels increased and that slight head ache disappeared. Though it was a small meal, my empty stomach seemed to fill up so quickly after it. My mood immediately improved.
The thing is that I chose to not eat for 24 hours to cleanse my body and give it a chance to rest. I know that I’m fortunate to be able to eat what I want when I want, and even overindulge. Million of people living in poverty should have such a luxury to be able to skip a meal because they can – not because they have to.
There’s a dessert truck parked outside around the corner from where I work selling sugary treats for $5.00. No one really needs that. Why not donate that $5 that would be wasted on junk to help someone who really needs a good meal? Or for someone who needs a micro loan to help them better themselves?
Here are some things you can do to help:
1. Donate through Kiva or Change.org
2. Click on any of the ads on my site (look to the right and down) – I will donate any money you generate to one of the causes listed above
3. Leave a comment on this post and I’ll donate 10 cents $1 per comment to one of the causes listed above
Thanks for stopping by!
