Get inspired – how to get more time in your days

fun, happiness, inspiration, magnificent mondays

Date 3rd Jan 2011   Comments No Comments »

Many of us are losing large gaps of time in our schedules –  stolen away from us. Lost years of time that we can never get back, wasted on activities that are not important and don’t bring us happiness, health, or any closer to creating the life we most desire.

One of the biggest time sucks come from television. Americans are watching more television than ever before – an average 34 hours per person per week. That’s almost a full-time job.

What else could you do if you claimed back even half of that time lost? How could it make your life more delicious – how might you become happier, fitter, healthier or just have more fun?

You could:

  • Write your novel
  • Learn to play guitar
  • Train for a triathlon
  • Volunteer at a soup kitchen
  • Study Spanish
  • Learn to cook better
  • Take up kick boxing
  • Plan your wedding and get married
  • See your friends more often
  • Join a book club and read more
  • Train for and run a marathon
  • Give yourself a weekly manicure
  • Learn to hula hoop
  • Plan a dream vacation
  • Cultivate your indoor garden
  • Redecorate your home
  • Take daily walks
  • Get your photos printed and organized

We have no limit on our resources, except for our time. And you never know when you’re going to run out of it. What would you want to accomplish if you had an extra 34 hours per week? Let me know in the comments.

Being Grateful – Happy Thanksgiving

fun, happiness, inspiration, mindset, spirituality

Date 24th Nov 2010   Comments No Comments »

I’m very grateful for many blessing that I have in my life. I’ve always noticed that the more I feel happy and grateful for everything that I have, the more good comes my way.

There’s a cool article in the Wall Street Journal about how gratitude can improve our health and our lives. Studies show that people who are frequently grateful have more energy, more friends, stay healthier, and have more happiness.

But you don’t really need science to tell you this. All you need to do is write your own list. I wrote this post after being inspired by a Let Your Life Bloom blog post written by @CoachVanessa around her birthday.  (Oh by the way, Vanessa is an amazing intuitive healer – I highly recommend working with her.)

Blessings – the things for which I’m grateful -  in no particular order:

1. Taking in cool, fresh air on a brisk walk outside, and followed by a cup of hot tea inside

2. Curling up under a blanket on the couch to read a good book

3. Listening to rock music on the weekend while I am cleaning the house

4.  Writing. I love to write. I’ve been doing it since I was a kid, and I’m so happy that I was encouraged to keep writing from a young age.

5. The feel of warm golden sand under my bare feet as I gaze into impossibly blue seas off tropical islands

6. Watching the sun rise at the running track in my local park as it slowly illuminates the trees, the fluffy clouds and the sky

7. The rush of gliding down a wide, powdery trail on a snowboard in the Colorado Rockies

8. Hula hooping! So much fun and good exercise, too

9. Resting in Savasana after an energizing yoga class

10. Listening to my iPod on the subway

11. My dear husband – I am so happy for the wonderful days we share together. I am so happy that fate brought us together eight years ago

12. My parents, my sister, aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents and in-laws and extended family with whom I’m blessed to share my life

13. Shorty, aka, Short Round, aka Cat Mouth – our furry kitty with the non-stop purr

14. My wonderful friends – all of them kind, brilliant, talented and beautiful people

15. My mentors – past, present, and future – who have gently but firmly guided me to become who I am today

16. My spiritual guides – thanks for being there, even when I didn’t know it

17. Everyone who reads my blog – thank you for listening, leaving your comments and spreading the light in the world

18. The many people I’ve met in my life while traveling around the world

19. The excitement of exploring a new place that I’ve never been – especially wandering around a new town without a plan, only a map

20. The quiet peace of early mornings when I’m the first to wake up

21. Watching the sun rise

22. Reading and writing hand-written letters

23. The Internets

24. The calm and meditative mood I get from of chopping vegetables, folding laundry and washing dishes

25. Eating fresh sautéed leafy greens

26. The healing power of spices

27. Garlic – delicious, and a magic cure-all

28. Singing along to the radio while driving

29. Hot coffee with cinnamon

30. Mom’s homemade waffles and baked goods – they’re magical.

31. Christmas lights

32. Warm outdoor fire pits on cool summer nights

33. Dark chocolate

34. Crisp apples and chunky peanut butter

35. Halloween, especially in NYC with the crazy Greenwich Village parade

36. My teenage self – when I dressed like a goth, moped around, and when every day was halloween

37. The view of the Manhattan skyline from the waterfront park in my neighborhood

38. Long walks around different neighborhoods in the city

39. Biking through Central Park on warm summer days

40. The crazy, fun and non-stop energy of New York City

Your turn: what are you grateful for? What makes you smile? What brightens your day? Let me know in the comments.

Moving through the fear of change

fun, happiness, inspiration, love, mindset, self care, spirituality

Date 6th Nov 2010   Comments No Comments »

Change is in the air. The weather is getting colder, we just had another election which changed the balance of power, and things seem to be moving along faster than they have in a while.

As I’ve spoken to quite a few of my friends over the past few weeks, they’ve noted that they’re having lots of change and transition, too.

For many, it’s making a career move in a direction that feels more heart centered than what they had been doing before. I’ve heard from so many people lately who are tired of just earning a paycheck and want to do something that they were meant to do in life. It’s refreshing to hear so many people following their passions.

For others, it’s a change in their family. Many of my friends are preparing to become a Mom for the first time. This exciting change brings lots of anticipation for what life might be like once the little one arrives – it’s exciting and scary.

And for others, it’s a change in health – finally being ready to learn how to release the weight without crazy diets, discover how to boost their energy and get their spark back, or figure out how to end nagging digestive issues for good.

The funny thing about change is that we all want to change something, and many of us hold ourselves back from actually making it. Most of the time it’s fear that holds us back.

Part of that fear is the uncertainty of what life will be like when you change.

There’s actual science behind why this is. Studies show that the brain views uncertainty the same way that it views physical pain – it registers as a threat. Your brain actually craves certainty, and uses similar circuits that register other rewards such as food and sex.

So how can you override your brain’s automatic way of thinking?

Get clear on your why
You know what you want to change, and you can reinforce the positive benefits of making the change by writing out a list of why you want it. Take 10 minutes to write out everything you will gain by changing.

For example, if you dropped 10 pounds, you could – wear that slinky dress hiding in the back of your closet, look better in your holiday photos, feel confident in your bathing suit on vacation, have more energy, look better naked, etc. Write non-stop and come up with as many reasons as you can – the more the better.

Calm yourself into change
A good reminder is to use the Louise Hay affirmation, “I am safe. It’s only change.”

If you think logically about change, it’s inevitable, and it’s always happening. But it only becomes a big deal when we think it’s a big deal. By continually reaffirming that you are safe and ok, and that change is good and something you actually want, you can help your brain get out of threat mode and get yourself into action.

Get Moving
If your thinking feels like it’s stagnant, one of the best things you can do is to get moving! When you change the way you’re moving, you change your physiology – your breathing changes, you activate different muscles, which activates different parts of your brain. All of this physical change can help you break through a negative thought pattern to open the door for new and more positive thoughts.

You can do something as simple as taking a walk or cleaning up your space. Or try something radically different than what you normally do. Recently, I climbed up a rock climbing wall and tried a hip hop dance class. The rock wall was much harder than I thought it would be, and I was really psyched when I reached the top. When I did the  hip hop class I was nervous about looking foolish in from of others – until  I realized that everyone else felt the same way. Once I dropped my thinking patterns and just did it, I had a ton of fun.

Do some inner work
Changing your thinking can take lots of practice. It’s easier when you have tools that can help you flip the switch whenever you need it – it can be an affirmation, a mantra, or something that reminds you of being happy and in the flow. Whatever you use, it should be something that you can use anytime to switch yourself instantly. The more you practice, the easier it will get and the better you’ll feel.

What do you do to help yourself move through the fear of change?

One of the most helpful tools that I’ve used is the Essential Spark – an instant breakthrough tool that helps you move through fear to get you where you want to go faster and easier than ever before. You can learn more about it here.

Regrouping on Vacation

fun, happiness, inspiration, self care

Date 25th Oct 2010   Comments No Comments »

I took a vacation with my husband two weeks ago, and now I’m feeling very refreshed and excited. It’s important to take breaks regularly, but a lot of times we forget this. Here’s what I remembered while on my break:

Sleep is highly underrated.

I need more sleep than I realize. When I have the opportunity to get deep, regular sleep that is uninterrupted by alarms, noise or bright lights, my body feels different. My mind is much sharper. I have so much more energy, and I get more creative. Since I returned, I’ve been trying to get into bed earlier. Mostly, it’s worked, and I still feel good.

Your eyes need a vacation, too.

Staring at a computer screen or a mobile device for too many hours causes eye strain. So does looking out on the gray metallic landscape of a concrete jungle. Getting out into nature does wonders for tired eyes. Lush green islands, deep ultramarine sea, and bright golden sun are wonderfully welcoming changes.

Trying something new can be fun

I took a hip hop dance class with a bunch of other vacationers. It was on a dance floor that had theater seating all around it, and there were plenty of other vacationers who decided to just watch. I (sort of) learned choreographed moves and then got to practice and perform them in front of the accidental audience. I’m pretty sure I was videotaped by a couple of people.

New things can also be scary

I climbed up a rock-climbing wall for the first time. I didn’t realize how much upper body strength it took to get up the wall. I also didn’t know how scary it could feel when you get stuck and can’t find the next step up. I didn’t realize how high up I would feel looking down from the top of the wall, on the top deck of a ship that is at least 14 stories high.

Pictures coming soon….

What about you? When was the last time you took a break? If you can’t remember, when can you schedule one? Let me know in the comments.

Exercise outside for a healthy body and happy mind

exercise, fun, happiness, inspiration

Date 13th May 2010   Comments 3 Comments »

Exercising outside can make you more than just fit – it can also give you a positive mental boost.

MSNBC reports that according to a study done by researchers at the University of Essex, even as little as five minutes of “green” activity such as walking, gardening, cycling or farming can make you feel better and boost your self esteem.

When you live in a city like I do, and you are always looking out on the bright white and gray of tall buildings and scrolling sidewalks, you start to crave green. Fortunately, there are plenty of parks around New York City, and a short train or bus ride can get you to greener environments.

If you live in New York City, there are plenty of workouts taking place outside in the warmer months. Some of my favorites include:

Kiki’s Traditional Tribal Fitness workout – takes place in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and Jackson Heights, Queens. A great trainer who’s very dedicated to his workout “family.”

Tai Chi and Yoga in Bryant Park – great free classes that run thoughout the summer months – starts in May. If you’ve never tried Tai Chi, I recommend it – doesn’t feel like a workout but talk about calm and balance after doing it.

If you know of more that you could recommend to me, please pass them on!

Get into the rhythm of winter

career, fun, happiness, inspiration, self care

Date 22nd Dec 2009   Comments No Comments »

Yesterday was the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. The Solstice marks the start of the winter season. It’s time to get cozy and rest.

Many animals are going into hibernation during this time of year. Us crazy humans, though, are running around, going to holiday parties, staying up late celebrating the season and wearing ourselves out with all of the activity. To get more connected to the rhythm of the season, try one or more of these tips:

Sleep more
– go with your natural body rhythm. If you’re feeling sleepy in the early evening, consider turning in earlier than you would normally do. If you’re ready to go to sleep at 9 pm or earlier, go for it. Getting adequate sleep is essential for good health, building your immune system and allowing your body to repair itself. Sleeping more can even help you lose weight and stay slim.

Warm up – eat more warm foods. You may notice cravings for hot foods, hot beverages, and warming spices. All of those things are perfect for the season and essential for keeping you healthy during the winter months. A nice beverage to have any time of day is a mug of hot water with a squeeze of lemon juice in it – soothing and delicious.

Slow down – take more time for yourself. The energy of winter is very yin – inward focused, contemplative, intuitive. It’s the perfect time to spend more quite time with yourself dreaming, journaling, taking a quiet walk in the winter snow. You can take stock of where you are now and where you want to go in the new year – and get a jumpstart on creating the life you desire before the new year rolls around.

Cultivate calm with a media diet

fun, happiness, mindfulness

Date 21st Dec 2009   Comments No Comments »

Have you ever gone on a media fast? This is when you consciously remove media from your life for a period of time. No TV. No radio. No Internet. No cell phones or gaming gadgets.

The easiest way to do this is to go on vacation somewhere remote where you don’t have access to your modern-day electronic conveniences. But it’s also possible to do it when you are in your everyday life – it just takes a little more effort.

Recently, we got rid of our cable TV subscription. Before, we had over 400 channels. Now we have about 20 on a good day; if the signal isn’t coming in clearly, we might only have 3 or 4.

Since we got rid of it, I’ve found that I feel much more calm and relaxed. I also have more time to myself. I used to have a bad habit of mindlessly channel surfing, wasting time watching any drivel I could find. Now that I don’t have the options, I’m not as inclined to settle in front of the TV for an hour or more. And while I still have the Internet for distractions, I don’t feel like it sucks up as much time as TV used to for me.

The silence is golden. No more endless chatter from having it constantly on in the background. The TV stays off more of the time than it used to. Turning off the chatter feels so much more peaceful.

Would you ever try a media fast? Or, is there one thing you’d be willing to take out of your media diet and see how it changes your life? Leave me a comment…

Get moving

exercise, fun, inspiration, self care

Date 10th Dec 2009   Comments No Comments »

Feeling a little tired and sluggish but don’t want to do your usual workout? Doing any sort of movement can help. Even if you’re just taking a walk, cleaning the house or stretching, it’s better than if you just sit there feeling gross.

Or do something totally out of your ordinary routine. Last night I went to a birthday party downtown where they had a DJ spinning awesome dance music – and I rocked out. So much more fun than doing my usual running and strength training routine. And I know I got a good workout because I broke a sweat, and felt totally energized yet tired afterwards.

Make your movement fun, and you’re much more likely to do it. What kind of movement makes you feel awesome?

From Zen Habits, here are 48 ideas on fun exercises

Each weekday in December I’ll be posting a new tip of the day to help you live a delicious life. If you like my tips, let me know in the comments!

Try something new – trust yourself and your instincts. You have dreams for a reason. It’s time to validate them and go for them – life is too short not to. I got this quote from a friend today and had to share it:

What direction you go in the cross-roads of life is up to you! Press on the gas and drive baby drive!
