magnificent mondays

How much of what you do each day is your own choice? Or even your own idea?

Or, let me put it this way: How often do you find yourself humming some song because you just heard it on TV or in the last store where you were shopping? How many billboards, online ads, or commercials do you hear or read per day? How many messages are you unwittingly being exposed to each and every day?

Even the things you heard your parents, teachers, or siblings repeating make an impression on you. How does it affect the way you see the world or your view of yourself?

For years, I would get anxious over thoughts of not being good enough.

The crazy part was that I really believed that all of those inner voice thoughts were true. There’s no saying where all of those nasty things came from, and in the end it doesn’t really matter. What did matter was that I believed them, and then I would become upset about what they told me. And they just weren’t true.

Here’s the real truth: I have the power to control my own thoughts and what I pay attention to.

This may sound pretty obvious. But the truth is that many of us don’t realize how much our thoughts are influenced by sources outside of us.

It is so liberating to know that you don’t have to pay attention and don’t have to believe these voices in your head. They’re meant to keep you safe and protect you from risk. Maybe at once time they really did help, but now they just don’t.

The easiest thing you can do is just say, thank you for sharing and move on.

You can also practice using affirmations. Practice saying to your face that you love yourself or that you’re beautiful and look in the mirror when you say it so you can see how you react. Over time it will get easier and easier to shift your thinking to more positive thoughts.

Choosing better thoughts creates the future you desire.

Where are you getting stuck in your thinking right now? How could making this shift change your life, starting today?

Looking in the mirror

inspiration, magnificent mondays, mindfulness, self care, spirituality

Date 4th Apr 2011   Comments No Comments »

I see you sitting across from me on the subway. You are looking around, not letting your eyes rest anywhere, not connecting with anyone. You wear all black so you can feel invisible. It also helps hide the bulges and excess that you carry on your body. You are sure that no one will even see you because of it.

You are mindlessly eating the chocolate bar. You break off a piece and eat it quickly. Not a minute later and you’ve got another one ready to go.

It’s almost mechanical – you’re eating and you know that you feel different, but you’re not aware of the cloying sweetness of sugar or the creamy coating in your mouth. You only stop when there’s nothing left.

And you sit there and wonder why it always seems so fleeting, feeling bad that you did it again, but knowing that you’ll probably do it again tomorrow, and the next day, and the next, because that is who you are.

But that’s where you’re wrong. You don’t know it yet. Or you do know it and you’ve forgotten.

Because the truth is that you are beautiful, inside and out. And all you need to do to connect to your own beauty is to connect with spirit. You know you have that connection. You’ve chosen to disconnect, believing that there’s something “out there” that will get you what you really want.

But what you really want is already here. You just need to touch the joy that’s available for you at any time, and anywhere you go.

You are loved. You are safe and secure. You are protected and supported by all that is. All you need to do is to allow this goodness into your life.

I know you can do it. Because I have done it, and I was once like you.

3 myths of healthy eating

diet, magnificent mondays, news

Date 7th Mar 2011   Comments No Comments »

Think you know the difference between healthy eating myths and reality? You just might, though many people are walking around misinformed. It’s not their fault – so much misinformation is out there on purpose so that you’ll buy certain products and think you’re doing the right thing for your body. BUT the very thing that you’re eating that you think will help could be causing the problem.

I was on Joshua Margolis’ Mind Over Matter radio show today dispelling a few myths. You can listen to the whole show on Talking Alternative Radio.

Here are a couple of common myths:

Fat makes you fat

This is part of the low-fat myth that has Americans getting fatter than ever. We’ve been living under the assumption that cutting fat and eating more carbohydrates will make you thin. Obviously that hasn’t worked out so well since obesity rates are higher than ever for both adults and children.

Sugar and processed carbs make you fat. Many processed foods also use bad fats, the ones that harden your arteries and cause inflammation, which leads to just about every disease imaginable. And this is what we’ve been told is good for us!

Healthy fats helps manage your blood sugar levels, keeping your insulin from spiking when you eat carbohydrates. Fat provides energy, and it is essential in helping in the digestive process. For example, healthy fat with vegetables (think olive oil on salad) helps digest and assimilate the vitamins and nutrients from the plants into your system.

Cutting the healthy fats cuts out vital nutrients – and makes you feel less satisfied. Low fat products usually contain unhealthy fats and added sugar to make them taste better. You would feel more satisfied and eat less if you just ate the full-fat, whole version of the foods that you eat instead of eating processed, sugared products.

A calorie is a calorie

Clearly this isn’t true. You can watch your calories and lose weight, but you won’t have optimal energy – and your body won’t work as well if you’re eating 1200 calories of cake vs. 1200 calories of fruits and vegetables.

Calories are a simple way to measure, but they don’t tell the whole story. It’s the quality of the food that’s important – you can be malnourished and overweight because you’re not feeding your body a variety of vitamins, minerals, healthy carbohydrates proteins and fats.

Milk does a body good

This is a marketing slogan. Low-fat milk is marketed as a health food that promotes weight loss, but it doesn’t actually help you lose weight.  In a weight loss study, out of 49 clinical trials, 41 showed no effects of diary or calcium on weight, two showed an increase in body weight with a dairy regimen, and one showed a lower rate of weight gain. Only five showed weight loss – and not necessarily caused by dairy consumption.

Did you know that farmers feed pigs low-fat milk so that they can gain weight faster? And mother’s milk is a food that’s given to babies to help them grow and put on weight quickly.

What do you think it will do for you?

Another point to consider – many people have an intolerance for dairy and don’t even know it.  Dairy intolerances cause indigestion and bloating, and interfere with digestive process. If you’ve noticed that you feel bloated or gassy after drinking milk or eating ice cream, I urge you to try a dairy experiment – cut the dairy out for a few weeks. See how you feel. When you’re ready, reintroduce a little bit and then see what happens. You might find that life is better without dairy.

Low-fat milk is also a processed food – i.e. it’s not whole and doesn’t have all the nutrients in it that whole milk contains. Pasteurization kills most of the healthy bacteria in raw milk, leaving behind a product that is nutritionally inferior. Finding real milk is difficult, but if you can, try it sometime and taste the difference. Then also notice how you feel after eating it. Some people can eat real milk but can’t tolerate processed, pasteurized milk.

Jack LaLanne – words of wisdom from a fitness pioneer

exercise, food, inspiration, magnificent mondays

Date 24th Jan 2011   Comments No Comments »

How do you build up your bank account? By putting something in it everyday.Your health account is no different. What I do today, I am wearing tomorrow. If I put inferior foods in my body today, I’m going to be inferior tomorrow, it’s that simple.

- Jack LaLanne

Jack LaLanne was a pioneer in modern fitness and nutrition. He was one of the first to encourage athletes to work out with weights and to get women exercising. He had one of the first and also the longest-running exercise program on TV. He had his own fitness chain and sold juicers.

And he walked his talk. He worked out two hours per day, 7 days per week, through his entire life. He never ate sweets – only fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean protein. And he celebrated his 70th birthday by swimming 1 1/2 miles towing 70 rowboats with 70 people in them.

He died at 96 of respiratory failure due to pneumonia. His legacy lives on in videos like this:

Get inspired – how to get more time in your days

fun, happiness, inspiration, magnificent mondays

Date 3rd Jan 2011   Comments No Comments »

Many of us are losing large gaps of time in our schedules –  stolen away from us. Lost years of time that we can never get back, wasted on activities that are not important and don’t bring us happiness, health, or any closer to creating the life we most desire.

One of the biggest time sucks come from television. Americans are watching more television than ever before – an average 34 hours per person per week. That’s almost a full-time job.

What else could you do if you claimed back even half of that time lost? How could it make your life more delicious – how might you become happier, fitter, healthier or just have more fun?

You could:

  • Write your novel
  • Learn to play guitar
  • Train for a triathlon
  • Volunteer at a soup kitchen
  • Study Spanish
  • Learn to cook better
  • Take up kick boxing
  • Plan your wedding and get married
  • See your friends more often
  • Join a book club and read more
  • Train for and run a marathon
  • Give yourself a weekly manicure
  • Learn to hula hoop
  • Plan a dream vacation
  • Cultivate your indoor garden
  • Redecorate your home
  • Take daily walks
  • Get your photos printed and organized

We have no limit on our resources, except for our time. And you never know when you’re going to run out of it. What would you want to accomplish if you had an extra 34 hours per week? Let me know in the comments.

Make every day a great day

magnificent mondays, mindset, self care

Date 14th Sep 2009   Comments No Comments »

Every day can be a great day – even a Monday. It’s all in your attitude.

I’ll be the first to admit it – I didn’t always have a good attitude. In fact, it was downright rotten at times. But I learned that being in a bad mood wasn’t a lot of fun – and it didn’t feel good either.

Back then, I had more headaches and stomach aches. I got sick more often. And while a lot of that probably had to do with the way I was eating, I’m sure my sour outlook on life didn’t help.

So, how do you have a good day every day? Start by getting yourself in a good mood. The easiest way is to laugh or smile.

Smile even if you don’t feel like it. How do you feel when you do it? I’ll bet you start feeling better. Maybe your posture even improves as you look up more. Then you can see everything going on around you that’s great.

Laugh, too – even if it’s fake, it can still have a positive effect. Did you know that laughter helps improve blood flow and can reduce your risk of  blood clots? It can also improve your immune system functioning, help regulate your blood sugar levels. Yes, all that just from laughing!

So get going – smile and laugh and have a great day. It will make you look and feel better, too.

Making affirmations work for you

inspiration, magnificent mondays, mindset

Date 31st Aug 2009   Comments No Comments »

Do affirmations work? Yes, they absolutely can – but only if you use them the right way. In my experience, you have to do three things to make them work:

Be consistent – Repeating your affirmations on a regular basis keeps them in your focus and top of mind. When you repeat regularly, you will be more likely to see the solutions that will help you reach your goals.

Be positive – Make your affirmation a positive condition, rather than a negative one. Your subconscious does not understand negatives – a statement like, “I am not fat” heard by your subconscious will be translated as “I am fat” (since not is not part of its vocabulary.) Instead, rewrite your affirmation like this – “I am slender and healthy.”

Be present – Bring your affirmation into the present as if it already exists. By acting as if you have what you want, it’s easier to manifest what you want.

I have had varying success with them – it really depends on how committed I am to using them on a daily basis. But after reading this Wired story about Scott Adams (creator of Dilbert), I’m more convinced that they not only work but also extremely powerful.

From the article:

Years ago, when his career was first getting started, he came to rely on daily affirmations. He decided that in order to manifest his goals, he simply needed to keep repeating them. In 1983, while readying himself for business school, his credo was “I, Scott Adams, will score in the 94th percentile on my GMATs.” He scored in the 94th percentile. Five years later, just before selling Dilbert, it was “I, Scott, will become a syndicated cartoonist.” Now he constructed a new affirmation, one that played in his head all day, every day: “I, Scott, will speak perfectly.”

Create an abundance mindset

happiness, inspiration, magnificent mondays, mindset

Date 24th Aug 2009   Comments No Comments »

What you focus on expands. Are you focusing on having more or less of what you want in your life?

If your mind lives in the land of lack, that’s what you will experience. On the other hand, if you decide to allow your mind to live in the land of  abundance, that’s what you’ll get.

How can you shift your focus to getting more of what you want – more money, better relationships, a healthier body, more energy, fame, fortune and freedom? Or other things that you want?

One of the easiest things to shift your focus on is money. Almost everyone wants more of it.

Reading the news or watching it on TV can be dangerous to your bank account. What are you hearing? All signs of troubling times – economic difficulty, job losses, bankruptcy. Thinking this way makes you worried about your own future. Suddenly you lose money or your job. Now what?

What if you decided not to listen to the chatter? You do have a choice as to what you pay attention to. No one is holding a gun to your head, telling you to pay attention or else.

I learned a powerful exercise from a mentor of mine that will allow you to start naturally attracting more money into your life. It works like this:

You can start this exercise whenever you want – start today, with Day 1. On day 1, you are given $1000 to spend however you want. Imagine how you will use that money. Will you take a vacation? Buy something for your home that you’ve been eyeing? Add attractive new clothes to your wardrobe? Write down exactly how you will spend your $1000 and your appreciation for this new found money in your life.

You must “spend” the money on the day that you’ve received it. Don’t worry about saving it because you’ll be receiving $2000 on day 2, $3000 on day 3, $4000 on day 4, and so on.

If this exercise seems too unbelievable, then you should definitely do it. When we’re open and ready to receive what we’ve been asking for, more of it will come our way and it will come to us faster.

Do this exercise every day for one year, and see how it changes your life. I challenge you to start it now. I’ve started it – and I will let you know how it’s changed my life, too.
