How to kick cravings with eating meditation

happiness, inspiration, mindfulness, mindset, self care

Date 4th Apr 2012   Comments No Comments »

Want to break your sugar habit or mindless snacking? Try this mindful eating exercise:

I learned about eating meditation around the time when I started on my path to wellness. At the time, I had started learning about ayurveda, yoga, and meditation with my teacher Frank Jude Boccio. The meditation group that I attended would have occasional tea ceremonies where we would practice eating meditation. It was the practice of mindful eating – and walking and breathing – that taught me how to be present in the moment and in my body. Once I started this practice, my eating habits became much healthier because I was so much more aware of how food affected me, when I was hungry, and when I felt full.

Have you tried eating meditation? Let me know about your experiences in the comments section below.

Break your nighttime snacking habit

food, mindfulness, self care, snacks

Date 21st Feb 2012   Comments No Comments »

It’s been a long day, and you’re ready to relax. As you watch TV and unwind, you crave a snack. But why do you want to eat if you’ve already had a full meal?

The snack attack is not always a hunger reaction – sometimes it’s your body’s way of saying that it’s craving some other kind of attention. If you work long hours, are restrictive with your diet, or deny yourself of pleasure and fun activities, you might crave snack foods like sweet chocolate, creamy cheese, or crunchy pretzels to alleviate your boredom, frustration, or anger.

The end result: extra eating that sabotages your efforts to stay healthy. Boo.

So, how can you break out of your nighttime eating habit?

Add more fun – what fun activity could you do instead of watching sitcoms? Reading a novel, playing a game, or dancing can shake things up.

Eat more food earlier – if you tend to starve yourself all day to have a huge dinner, try spreading out your meals more, and eat more at breakfast. You’ll eat less overall and weight will fall off effortlessly

Take breaks – if you’re stuck at a desk all day, break up your day with stretches every hour. Take a walk to the water cooler at least once an hour, stretch, move, and give your eyes a rest from the computer. You’ll feel so much better once you get moving.

Which tip are you going to use first? Leave your response in the comments section below!

Stop the mindless eating

inspiration, mindfulness, self care

Date 13th Dec 2011   Comments No Comments »

Isn’t it so easy to get a snack when you are bored or want to avoid cleaning, doing the dishes, or some sort of work or homework assignment? The snacks always used to beckon me to the kitchen, no matter if I was hungry or full.

These days I do a lot less mindless eating, though I have to confess that sometimes I eat in front of my computer. I know, this is not a good habit to have.

So, how do you break it?

First thing, make it a rule that you eat at a table, sitting down, away from the computer, TV, or other distractions.

Then, take a breath before you begin eating. Look at the food that you’re about to eat. Enjoy the aroma of it before you put it into your mouth. Sit there and give a silent thanks for the gift you’re about to receive.

When you take your first bite, savor it. Chew it well. Let the texture, flavor, and sensation take over your mouth. Focus on that only. Notice how the flavor changes as you chew.

Pause before your next bite. And pause after each bite. After you’ve eaten a few bites, check in with yourself to rate your hunger level. You might find that, if you keep practicing this, you don’t need as much food as you thought to feel satisfied.

Try it out for a week and see what happens. The new habit will feel strange and inconvenient when you start. But as you practice, you’ll see how much more enjoyment you get out of your food, and how much you were missing all of this time.

Delicious thoughts for a beautiful body: How to tame mind chatter

happiness, inspiration, mindset, self care

Date 5th Sep 2011   Comments No Comments »

You probably have heard the little voice one time or another. It’s that one that tries to keep you from progressing.

You’re working hard to get healthier, and then something trips you up. You miss a workout, or you eat too much chocolate. The voice usually says something like, “I messed up again. What’s wrong with me?”

Or you do something amazing – like run a 5k, or heal your digestive issues so that you’re not on meds anymore. You’re thrilled by your progress, but that voice comes back and says, “It’s no big deal. Anyone can do that.”

It’s easy to believe these thoughts – after all, they’re in your head. Why would false thoughts be in there?

That’s just the trouble. Your thinking may have been influenced by others and their beliefs about themselves, the world and how things work. And who knows where they got their thoughts from…

You have a choice what to believe. You can choose your own thoughts. Why not choose great ones about yourself?

Choose loving thoughts and your body will naturally respond. Don’t you just love getting a random compliment from someone? And if you’re thinking, “Well, usually I just brush it off…” Time to change that pattern!

Choose loving thoughts and your body will naturally respond. When you love yourself with loving throughs, you feel happier. When you feel good, you start looking better. People respond to you because you’re acting with more confidence. And you will increase your ability to attract what you want.

Here are five steps to creating delicious thoughts for a beautiful body:

  1. Get happy – whatever puts you in an instantly good mood, do it. I like dancing to a favorite song on my iPod. Any movement can change your mood quickly.
  2. Smile – it makes you happy. Feel the happiness as lightness in your heart, a softening of tense shoulders, a tingling on your skin. Enjoy the feeling.
  3. Affirm – look yourself “in the eyes” (in a mirror) and say your positive affirmation. Try something like, “I love me,” or “I am beautiful,” or anything else that makes you feel good.
  4. Appreciate – keep a running list or journal about your accomplishments. No matter how big or small, add a few to it each day.
  5. Accept – allow yourself to acknowledge compliments that come your way with a simple “Thank you!” It makes you (and the complimentor) feel good.

Looking in the mirror

inspiration, magnificent mondays, mindfulness, self care, spirituality

Date 4th Apr 2011   Comments No Comments »

I see you sitting across from me on the subway. You are looking around, not letting your eyes rest anywhere, not connecting with anyone. You wear all black so you can feel invisible. It also helps hide the bulges and excess that you carry on your body. You are sure that no one will even see you because of it.

You are mindlessly eating the chocolate bar. You break off a piece and eat it quickly. Not a minute later and you’ve got another one ready to go.

It’s almost mechanical – you’re eating and you know that you feel different, but you’re not aware of the cloying sweetness of sugar or the creamy coating in your mouth. You only stop when there’s nothing left.

And you sit there and wonder why it always seems so fleeting, feeling bad that you did it again, but knowing that you’ll probably do it again tomorrow, and the next day, and the next, because that is who you are.

But that’s where you’re wrong. You don’t know it yet. Or you do know it and you’ve forgotten.

Because the truth is that you are beautiful, inside and out. And all you need to do to connect to your own beauty is to connect with spirit. You know you have that connection. You’ve chosen to disconnect, believing that there’s something “out there” that will get you what you really want.

But what you really want is already here. You just need to touch the joy that’s available for you at any time, and anywhere you go.

You are loved. You are safe and secure. You are protected and supported by all that is. All you need to do is to allow this goodness into your life.

I know you can do it. Because I have done it, and I was once like you.

Moving through the fear of change

fun, happiness, inspiration, love, mindset, self care, spirituality

Date 6th Nov 2010   Comments No Comments »

Change is in the air. The weather is getting colder, we just had another election which changed the balance of power, and things seem to be moving along faster than they have in a while.

As I’ve spoken to quite a few of my friends over the past few weeks, they’ve noted that they’re having lots of change and transition, too.

For many, it’s making a career move in a direction that feels more heart centered than what they had been doing before. I’ve heard from so many people lately who are tired of just earning a paycheck and want to do something that they were meant to do in life. It’s refreshing to hear so many people following their passions.

For others, it’s a change in their family. Many of my friends are preparing to become a Mom for the first time. This exciting change brings lots of anticipation for what life might be like once the little one arrives – it’s exciting and scary.

And for others, it’s a change in health – finally being ready to learn how to release the weight without crazy diets, discover how to boost their energy and get their spark back, or figure out how to end nagging digestive issues for good.

The funny thing about change is that we all want to change something, and many of us hold ourselves back from actually making it. Most of the time it’s fear that holds us back.

Part of that fear is the uncertainty of what life will be like when you change.

There’s actual science behind why this is. Studies show that the brain views uncertainty the same way that it views physical pain – it registers as a threat. Your brain actually craves certainty, and uses similar circuits that register other rewards such as food and sex.

So how can you override your brain’s automatic way of thinking?

Get clear on your why
You know what you want to change, and you can reinforce the positive benefits of making the change by writing out a list of why you want it. Take 10 minutes to write out everything you will gain by changing.

For example, if you dropped 10 pounds, you could – wear that slinky dress hiding in the back of your closet, look better in your holiday photos, feel confident in your bathing suit on vacation, have more energy, look better naked, etc. Write non-stop and come up with as many reasons as you can – the more the better.

Calm yourself into change
A good reminder is to use the Louise Hay affirmation, “I am safe. It’s only change.”

If you think logically about change, it’s inevitable, and it’s always happening. But it only becomes a big deal when we think it’s a big deal. By continually reaffirming that you are safe and ok, and that change is good and something you actually want, you can help your brain get out of threat mode and get yourself into action.

Get Moving
If your thinking feels like it’s stagnant, one of the best things you can do is to get moving! When you change the way you’re moving, you change your physiology – your breathing changes, you activate different muscles, which activates different parts of your brain. All of this physical change can help you break through a negative thought pattern to open the door for new and more positive thoughts.

You can do something as simple as taking a walk or cleaning up your space. Or try something radically different than what you normally do. Recently, I climbed up a rock climbing wall and tried a hip hop dance class. The rock wall was much harder than I thought it would be, and I was really psyched when I reached the top. When I did the  hip hop class I was nervous about looking foolish in from of others – until  I realized that everyone else felt the same way. Once I dropped my thinking patterns and just did it, I had a ton of fun.

Do some inner work
Changing your thinking can take lots of practice. It’s easier when you have tools that can help you flip the switch whenever you need it – it can be an affirmation, a mantra, or something that reminds you of being happy and in the flow. Whatever you use, it should be something that you can use anytime to switch yourself instantly. The more you practice, the easier it will get and the better you’ll feel.

What do you do to help yourself move through the fear of change?

One of the most helpful tools that I’ve used is the Essential Spark – an instant breakthrough tool that helps you move through fear to get you where you want to go faster and easier than ever before. You can learn more about it here.

Regrouping on Vacation

fun, happiness, inspiration, self care

Date 25th Oct 2010   Comments No Comments »

I took a vacation with my husband two weeks ago, and now I’m feeling very refreshed and excited. It’s important to take breaks regularly, but a lot of times we forget this. Here’s what I remembered while on my break:

Sleep is highly underrated.

I need more sleep than I realize. When I have the opportunity to get deep, regular sleep that is uninterrupted by alarms, noise or bright lights, my body feels different. My mind is much sharper. I have so much more energy, and I get more creative. Since I returned, I’ve been trying to get into bed earlier. Mostly, it’s worked, and I still feel good.

Your eyes need a vacation, too.

Staring at a computer screen or a mobile device for too many hours causes eye strain. So does looking out on the gray metallic landscape of a concrete jungle. Getting out into nature does wonders for tired eyes. Lush green islands, deep ultramarine sea, and bright golden sun are wonderfully welcoming changes.

Trying something new can be fun

I took a hip hop dance class with a bunch of other vacationers. It was on a dance floor that had theater seating all around it, and there were plenty of other vacationers who decided to just watch. I (sort of) learned choreographed moves and then got to practice and perform them in front of the accidental audience. I’m pretty sure I was videotaped by a couple of people.

New things can also be scary

I climbed up a rock-climbing wall for the first time. I didn’t realize how much upper body strength it took to get up the wall. I also didn’t know how scary it could feel when you get stuck and can’t find the next step up. I didn’t realize how high up I would feel looking down from the top of the wall, on the top deck of a ship that is at least 14 stories high.

Pictures coming soon….

What about you? When was the last time you took a break? If you can’t remember, when can you schedule one? Let me know in the comments.

Are you feeding your whole self?

food, happiness, inspiration, love, mindfulness, mindset, relationships, self care, spirituality

Date 14th Sep 2010   Comments 1 Comment »

The old adage, “you are what you eat,” is absolutely true – whether you mean real food or your “soul’s food.”

It’s easy to tell when you’re eating well. Nourish yourself with a well-balanced plate, and you thrive with energy for doing what you love: like flowing through sun salutations in yoga class, bike riding with your family, and spending time with friends on the weekend.

Eat empty-calorie junk food and you’ll feel bloated, cranky, irritable unfocused. Empty calories can lead to insulin resistance, diabetes, and heart issues and you’ll need to shop for bigger clothes.

Your “soul’s food” is equally important. Your soul thrives when what you’re doing is aligned with who you truly are. And you know your soul is being well fed when you notice that you:

  • Skip your way to work
  • Gaze at your partner like you’re still dating
  • Feel the weight of financial burden lift from your shoulders
  • Are at peace and feel one with the world

If you sense that you’re missing any of these key ingredients in your life, your soul is hungry. If you’re not feeding your soul, you may be walking around with that “empty” feeling. Something is missing, and you can’t put your finger on it. You may be thinking, “Is that all there is?”

Here’s the thing – it’s not that you are intentionally preventing your soul from nourishment, and it’s completely not your fault for not feeding it. Your underlying beliefs may be undermining your best efforts. And that’s mostly about what’s in your head. Really.

The good news — you can easily start feeding your soul once you clear these limiting beliefs, even if you don’t know exactly what they are.

I’m really excited to be working with Whole Mind Mastery expert Kit Furey to offer you a completely fr*ee teleclass:

Soul Food: Clear the Blocks to Attracting Your Most Essential Desires!

During the call, we will do a quick check-in to see if your soul is getting the food it needs in every area of your life.

We will also go through an exercise to show you how to shift the self-limiting beliefs that may be keeping y\\our soul from experiencing the fullness of your passions and purpose. You’ll also discover:

  • Five secret signs that show self-sabotage may lurk in your life
  • Why your beliefs about what you do and love are “make it or break it” factors that drive your life
  • You’ll actually be guided through a gentle exercise to remove blocks and reclaim vitality and joy while you’re on the call
  • And you’ll come away with a strategy to easily overcome blocks to getting the most from your soul food, even if you don’t know right now what’s holding you back.

There’s no cost for this training, but you must sign up to access it:

Stressed? Use this one minute cure

happiness, mindfulness, self care

Date 7th Sep 2010   Comments No Comments »

Have you ever felt like your thoughts are going a million miles an hour and you can’t seem to just focus on one thing for more than a moment? It makes you feel anxious because you feel like you’re missing something but you just don’t know what that is, and you feel like you’re running out of time…

I get this feeling when I’m trying to do too many things at once. Most of the time I’m trying to multitask – writing something here, posting another thing there, checking my e-mail, answering the phone.

The easiest thing to do is just breathe.

When you’re feeling anxious and stressed, you’re probably holding your breath or breathing shallowly. If you don’t get enough air in your lungs, you literally become out of breath. There’s not enough oxygen in there. Your stress levels rise and you feel tightness in your shoulders and neck. The tension builds and your adrenals start working overtime in fight or flight mode.

Look at this – you’ve completely stressed yourself out just by forgetting to breathe.

You’ll only need a minute to do this exercise. Take a step back from whatever you’re doing and focus on your breath.

Breathe in – and let your lungs fill with air. Hold it in for a second.

Breathe out – let everything out, pushing all of the stale air from the bottom of your lungs out.

Breathe in – feel your body drinking in the nourishment from the breath.

Breathe out – release and relax.

Notice how you feel. A little more relaxed? Calmer? More at peace? Try this the next time you feel stressed out and let me know how it works for you.

Starting your day right

happiness, inspiration, mindfulness, mindset, self care, spirituality

Date 2nd Sep 2010   Comments 2 Comments »

A beautiful sun rises over the running track early in the morning. I took this photo in early summer. Now that we’re turning toward autumn, the sun is rising around the same time as when I snapped this.

McCarren Park Track

I like running in the morning, but I know many people who can’t fathom working out so early. But just because you’re not a “morning” person doesn’t mean that you can’t have a great morning.

But it’s up to us to decide that we will focus on the present moment, and enjoy where we are – right here, right now. Because this is the only thing that is.

It’s easy to drift from one thought to another, constantly worrying about the future or dwelling in the past. But we can only live right now. Imagine what your life would be like if you could stay focused on being present. How would it change the way you think about your everyday activities? How would your appreciation for what is change? How could you enjoy each day more?

Try this:

The Mindfulness Yoga blog recommends starting each day by reciting a gatha – short verse that serve as reminders to stay present. The morning gatha is this:

Waking up this morning, I smile.
A brand new day is before me.
I vow (intend, aspire) to live fully in each moment,
And to look upon all beings with eyes of compassion.

If you try this, I recommend doing it for at least a week – if not the whole month. Notice how your thoughts start to shift as you take on this practice.  And let me know how it goes for you.
