Blog action day: climate change

environment, events, tips thursdays

Date 15th Oct 2009   Comments No Comments »

This year’s Blog Action Day topic is Climate Change. Here are some of my thoughts on how you can live a more sustainable life and help protect the environment. I made this speech a couple of years ago at my Toastmasters club:

I’ve been trying to get more green lately. I have been good about buying foods from local sources and carrying leftovers for lunch instead of getting convenience foods. I’m contemplating riding my bike to work, though it’s getting quite cold in New York.

What changes do you think you could make to help curb climate change?

7 ways to get more vegetables in your diet

tips thursdays

Date 8th Oct 2009   Comments No Comments »

The USDA recommends 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables in your diet every day. Seems impossible? Here’s some ideas of getting more vegetables on your plate and into your belly:

  1. Veggies for breakfast – sound gross? A vegetable omelet is an easy way to add more veggies to your diet. Or how about dinner leftovers? After all, you probably used to eat pizza for breakfast when you were younger – why not your leftover stir-fry or vegetable soup from dinner last night?
  2. Salad for lunch – an easy way to get two or more servings on your plate. Top your salad with lean protein, tofu, or beans for a more satisfying meal.
  3. Snacks – crunch on cut veggie sticks dipped in hummus, homemade vinaigrette, or peanut sauce – just make sure you portion out the sauce so that you’re not eating too much of it.
  4. Add into soups – even if you’re picking up an organic boxed soup, adding some fresh vegetables to it will make it taste fresher. Try chopped broccoli, greens or mixed vegetables
  5. Add a green salad – if you eat a sandwich or get soup for lunch, try adding a side salad for more fiber, vitamins and antioxidants
  6. Add to your sandwich – stuff in some sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, sprouts, radishes to add flavor and crunch
  7. Blend into smoothies – make your morning breakfast or afternoon snack a power drink by adding some healthy, leafy greens into the mix. Spinach blends in easily and has a mild flavor – you won’t even know it’s in there.

I had to get up early recently to attend a breakfast meeting. Though I was running a little late, I had to stop and take this photo. I couldn’t believe how beautiful the sky was at sunrise.

Spice up your life with healthy herbs

green market herbsCooking with herbs makes your life delicious and more nutritious, too. When I’m cooking, most of the time I cook without a recipe. I use many different spices and herbs to flavor my dishes and make them more savory and delicious. The great thing about cooking this way is that it keeps me naturally healthy – many herbs have amazing healing properties. Here are a few of my favorites and how they can keep you healthy:

Mustard seed – good source of selenium, which can help reduce symptoms of arthritis, severity of asthma, and help prevent cancer and magnesium, which helps lower high blood pressure and reduce the frequency of migraines

Oregano – its antibacterial properties can help prevent infection, and anti-inflammatory properties help reduce arthritis symptoms. It is also a good source of fiber and a variety of nutrients

Rosemary – warming herb in Chinese medicine, high in antioxidants, also soothing to the stomach and helps relax muscles

Turmeric – another anti-inflammatory spice that can protect against colon and prostate cancers, inflammatory bowel disease, and can help people suffering from cystic fibrosis

There are many other spices and herbs with which you can experiment.

One simple step to overcome a number one fear

inspiration, mindset, tips thursdays, Uncategorized

Date 10th Sep 2009   Comments No Comments »

I’m a professional public speaker, but I wasn’t born this way – far from it, in fact. It took a long time for me to get there, mostly because of this one thing I wasn’t doing.

I resisted my fear for a long time. It’s not easy to face it, but just by doing so you can start moving through it. Sometimes, it takes acceptance of what is just to move forward in life. You don’t like the present situation – whether it’s a fear of public speaking, losses you have suffered, the number you get when you step on the scale, the people who have angered you, or anything that you don’t want. Resisting it will only keep you stuck where you are.

In her book, Feel the Fear . . . and Do It Anyway (r), Susan Jeffers talks about the benefits of saying yes to your universe:

Saying yes means letting go of resistance and letting in the possibilities that our universe offers in new ways of seeing the world. It means to relax bodily and calmly survey the situation, thereby reducing upset and anxiety. Aside from the emotional benefits, the physical benefits are enormous. Conversely, saying no means to be a victim… Saying no means to block, to fight, to resist opportunities for growth and challenge. Saying no creates tension, exhaustion, wasted expenditure of energy, emotional upheaval – or, worse, it creates apathy. “I can’t cope. I can’t go on. There is no hope.” The truth of the matter is that saying yes is our only hope.

Saying yes means getting up and acting on your belief that you can create meaning and purpose in whatever life hands you.

My fear of public speaking kept me hiding in the back in classes, praying that the teacher wouldn’t call on me. I made it all the way through high school and college this way.

Because I was so afraid to speak in front of people, I found myself missing out on things that I wanted to do. I am a writer, and I wanted more people to hear my work, but I would have died if I had read anything in front of people. Making speeches at special occasions, like weddings – that was automatically out. It also held me back in my career – I was afraid to speak or present my work in meetings. And yet, I kept resisting it.

Finally I couldn’t take it anymore – I said yes to the universe and accepted my fear so that I could overcome it.

I started practicing by going to Toastmasters and learning how to give speeches to an audience. Sometimes I did well – other times I bombed. I remember a humorous speech contest that I participated in and utterly failed – there was nothing funny about my speech. But I survived and got though it. And though I lost, I knew that I had overcome something that had been weighing on me for a long time.

Even though I know that my fear around public speaking will probably never totally go away, I can still say yes to it and do something positive about the fear – and be open to new possibilities.

Boost your energy in 5 minutes or less

fun, self care, tips thursdays

Are you sleepy? Feeling a little out of it? No need to stay in that state. Try one of these 3 tips to feel more awake naturally:

1- Drink your water – you may feel tired if you’re dehydrated. Get up and get a glass of water. Drink it slowly for a few minutes. Pause and check in with yourself – how do you feel now?

2- Stretch – if you’ve been sitting still staring at the computer for a long time, your eyes might be dry and your muscles could be tired from keeping you still in the same position for so long. Make it a practice to get up every 30 minutes to 1 hour and take a 2 minute break to stretch. Stand up, reach your hands over your head. Imagine your fingers touching the sky while your feet get rooted into the ground. Breathe deeply. You can also do some twists, touch your toes, or stretch your sides.

3- Breathe – shallow breathing deprives your body of vitamin O (oxygen). Try deep breathing for a few minutes. Inhale deeply for 4 seconds, hold the breath for 7 seconds, then exhale for 8 seconds until you run out of breath. This deep cleansing breath will help relax and oxygenate your blood. If you need more stimulation, try the breath of fire – inhale deeply, retain the breath for a second. then begin pumping the breath out in short bursts – as if you were fanning a fire with billows – exhaling shortly, rapidly and continuously through your nostrils. This yogic breath stimulates the mind and will give you instant energy

3 tips to avoid the summer cold

tips thursdays

Date 20th Aug 2009   Comments 1 Comment »

I seem to have caught a sinus infection, and it’s the middle of August. Sinus infections and colds usually happen in the winter, when it’s cold out. Immune systems get worn down if you’re not getting enough Vitamin C and the lack of Vitamin D (from the sun) also contributes.

So what’s my excuse? How did I get a cold? Here’s how:

Air Conditioning – spending too much time in freezing cold environments re-creates winter conditions. My sinuses get dried out, and my body compensates by producing more mucus. Results – infection. Remedy – use a neti pot to keep nose moist and healthy.

Stress – the silent killer makes us sick, ages us more quickly, taxes the adrenals and burns out the immune system. I strive to live a delicious life but even I get caught up in day to day stresses. Remedy – take more time to relax, meditate, stretch, do yoga. I need to realize that I also can’t get everything done in one day – and that’s perfectly ok.

Sleep deprivation – running low on sleep compromises the immune system. The hours you spend sleeping are hours that your body repairs itself. I’ve been staying up too late, and working too much. Remedy – shut down the computer, TV and other electronics earlier than usual. Dim the lights and fall asleep naturally at an earlier hour.

Thursdays are my early mornings. I meet with a group of professionals over breakfast to network, and I need to get up extra early to do this. I have to admit that if  I don’t get enough sleep the night before, it’s likely that I’ll want to grab a second cup of green tea.

Many people that I know feel their energy is constantly low and ask me what they can do to alleviate it. Here are my four tips to help raise your energy:

4 ways to control cravings

diet, food, self care, tips thursdays

Date 6th Aug 2009   Comments No Comments »

Cravings can make even the healthiest eaters go off track and indulge
in foods that can make us feel tired, sluggish or unwell. When you’re
feeling “bad” and want a treat, what do you do? Here are four simple
tips you can use to control your cravings:

1. Identify the missing link – what are you really craving? Your craving isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It might be your body asking for something
that it’s missing. If you crave salt, you could be missing minerals.
Cravings for creamy foods can mean you need more fat. Think about what you’ve been eating and if it’s meeting your nutritional needs.

2. Understand your motivation – some cravings are emotional, not physical. Are you really hungry at 3 pm, or are you just avoiding dreaded work that you’d rather not do? By addressing the underlying cause, your craving will likely disappear.

3. Substitute – With physical cravings, it’s always better to try and substitute an unhealthy snack food with a healthy one. Try some juicy cut summer fruit – like peaches or plums or apricots – instead of candy for sweets. Crispy and salty can be satisfied with homemade kale chips.

4.  Reward yourself – if your craving is emotional rather than physical,
figure out how you can fix it without eating. Give yourself a non-food treat for getting a dreaded task out of the way. At a certain point, it’s easier to do  it than avoid it – and you’ll have the fun of a reward afterward.

If you want to learn more about how you can control your cravings, contact me.
