Happy summer solstice – yoga in Times Square

Uncategorized

Date 22nd Jun 2011   Comments No Comments »

Happy summer solstice! Today is the first official first day of summer. How did you celebrate? I went to Times Square and practiced yoga with about 1000 other people in the Mind Over Madness Solstice Yoga in Times Square.

For the past few years, the Times Square Alliance has worked with local yoga teachers to bring peace to Times Square on the day that the sun shines highest in the sky over New York City. This year, I took the morning Jivamukti yoga class with Nicole Nichols on a new mat from Lucy activewear.

I started the class out a little tired and sleepy. By the end, I was invigorated and happy and ready to start the day.
So yes, you can find calm even in Times Square.

5 truths surfing taught me about getting healthy

Uncategorized

Date 23rd May 2011   Comments No Comments »

Here I am, surfing in Cabarete, Dominican Republic. We’ve been dreaming about going to surf camp for years, and we decided to finally go for it! We found the most amazing place to stay in the Dominican Republic, right in Cabarete, the heart of surfing and kite boarding on the island. Swell Surf Camp was our home away from home. We surfed, made friends, hung out in hammocks, had lazy afternoons walking around town, and generally had an amazing time just taking it easy.

People wonder how I surf if I live in NYC. Well, there are a few places to surf around here, though I have to admit that I haven’t been doing a whole lot of surfing in NY over the past couple of years. So it was wonderful to be able to take a vacation where we really got to learn how to surf and spend a number of days doing it so that we could get somewhat proficient. Before this trip, I hadn’t taken many lessons, and since we weren’t that good, we didn’t get to enjoy it much at home.

We had five days of lessons, each day getting progressively harder, followed by 4 days of board rentals to keep mastering what we learned. After ten days in surfing paradise, I could easily get back on my surfboard and actually know what I’m doing this time.

Five things I learned surfing are also true for what you need to do to get healthy:

Visualize your goal

See your ride and you’ll likely catch it. When you can visualize how you’ll catch the wave, pop up, and ride it in, you’re much more likely to actually get it. This is half of surfing – just gazing out at the sea to watch what’s coming up at you.

If you’re trying to shed pounds, or get more energy, you need to visualizing yourself feeling strong, confident, and looking great in your clothes. This will help you stay focused and taking action to get there.

Preparation is key

A little physical preparation goes a long way when you start surfing. You’ll do better if you have some upper body strength to paddle out and to catch waves.

Preparation is also important when you’re getting healthy. Planning out your meals and when you will exercise will help you stay on track.

Learn faster with expert advice

My surfing improved quickly when I had Brock and Luciano, our surfing instructors, watching me from the shore and then offering critiques on land. I learned how to adjust my stance and shift my weight on my feet to balance better and turn the board.

If you have someone show you how what they did to shed pounds, it is easier and faster for you to follow what they did than to try and figure it out on your own.

Face your fears and go for it anyway

If you’re sitting on your board nervous and tense about getting tumbled by a wave, you won’t see the good waves when they show up.  Know that it might happen, but go for the ride anyway.  Stay relaxed so that you can catch a good one when it shows up.

You may be afraid of failure or success, or of leaving people behind if you change. If you’re nervous about change, because it’s unknown, repeat to yourself, “I am safe, it’s only change.” Then boldly step out and do it.

Have fun no matter what

The whole goal of surfing is fun. Some days will be perfect, and you’ll catch many waves. And then some days you won’t catch anything because the waves are too flat, or too inconsistent. You might sit there for an hour waiting for the perfect wave. It comes along, you catch it, and that’s it for that session.

As you go on your health journey, you’ll have good and bad days. It’s totally normal to eat really healthfully and then have one “bad” day where you overeat or have cake. Know that it’s a journey and that you can start again as soon as your next meal. And have fun – you’re making yourself healthier and happier each day.

Diets don’t work but this does

happiness, inspiration, mindfulness, mindset, Uncategorized

Date 13th Sep 2010   Comments No Comments »

How many times have you gone on a diet and failed? I know that I have more times than I can count. I hated the struggle when I dieted. The weighing and measuring of my food, perfectly portioned out. Ironically, once I stopped the strict dieting was when I was able to easily shed the weight. And that’s why I don’t do it anymore.

I’ve worked with many people who come to me all fired up to make changes. They’re very motivated and want to get started right away on releasing weight. We start working together and everything is going great. They’re making changes, the weight is starting to come off, and they’re feeling better than they have in a long time.

And then… all of the sudden something happens. A big event – wedding, vacation, long weekend  away – derails their plan. They feel like they’ve messed everything up, all of the good work that they’ve done. But the thing is that it’s really easy to get back on track. A big part of sticking with a plan has to do with being clear on what you want, and keeping your goal top of mind. And that’s why I’m here.

But the other part is eliminating underlying beliefs that keep you from getting what you want, even if you stay focused on it.  I find that this is the main reason why diets don’t work.

People diet to make a change, and their expectation is that they will stick with the plan to release the weight, and then they can go back to what they were doing. But this doesn’t make sense. If you go back to what you were doing, you’ll end up back where you were.

If you want to truly change, you have to be willing to do what it takes. It may seem uncomfortable at first because it is a new way of eating and thinking. But if you make easy lateral shifts in your habits, easing into eating more high-quality foods and healthier portions, the weight melts off without you even realizing it.

Still, some people struggle with this – and it permeates other areas of their life. Now they’re not just eating poorly, they’re also not doing the things that they love that will feed their souls.

If you’ve ever felt this way, take heart. There’s actually a simple solution. And I’ll be offering a free teleclass training, with Whole Mind Mastery expert Kit Furey, on Wednesday, September 15, to help you make this shift easily.  And, the best part is that you can participate from anywhere – Sign up and get access to the call-in details:

A quick update

Uncategorized

Date 8th Jan 2010   Comments No Comments »

It’s been a crazy start to 2010 here. I have wanted to post something all week, and I’ve had almost no internet access. This forced break has been nice but also somewhat stressful. I feel like I’m missing something when I don’t have access, which makes me realize that I do have a little problem – an internet problem.

I don’t really make resolutions, but I am planning on spending more time on things I know I need to do and less time online.

Don’t get me wrong – I love being online, blogging, and keeping in touch with people.  But I waste too much time online doing things of little value. Do I really need to check my e-mail every five minutes? I know I’d get so much more done if I didn’t.

….

Meanwhile, I have lots of new things coming up this year – I’m excited to launch my Create Your Delicious Life 6-week program. If you haven’t checked it out yet, look here: http://www.liveadeliciouslife.com/my-programs/

I will be posting some recent thoughts I had over the past two weeks  – including goal setting, the Biggest Loser, health and mindset, and more. Stay tuned…

Healthy stir-fried chicken

Stir fried chicken

Stir fried chicken

If you plan ahead, weeknight dinners can be simple and delicious. We cooked the brown rice a couple of days ahead of time so we didn’t have to worry about preparing it – just reheat and eat. Stir-fried chicken is a simple, healthy dish. What takes the longest is cutting up all of the vegetables. split that with someone and prep of this dish will be 30 minutes or less.
Ingredients:

4-5 cups chopped vegetables – we used cabbage, onions, peppers, celery (but use whatever you want)
1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast or thighs
4-5 cloves garlic, minced
1 inch ginger, chopped fine

Sauce
4 tablespoons tamari (it’s wheat free)
2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
1 heaping teaspoon corn starch (get a high-quality brand)
Mix and set aside

Heat a little oil in a wok on very high heat. Make sure the pan is super hot before you start cooking anything – the oil should look like it’s going to burn. Add the chicken and saute until it’s mostly cooked. Remove from the pan. Add in the vegetables and saute until cooked. Add the sauce and stir frequently. Near the end, add in the chicken to finish cooking. Serve immediately with brown rice.

Spice up your life with healthy herbs

green market herbsCooking with herbs makes your life delicious and more nutritious, too. When I’m cooking, most of the time I cook without a recipe. I use many different spices and herbs to flavor my dishes and make them more savory and delicious. The great thing about cooking this way is that it keeps me naturally healthy – many herbs have amazing healing properties. Here are a few of my favorites and how they can keep you healthy:

Mustard seed – good source of selenium, which can help reduce symptoms of arthritis, severity of asthma, and help prevent cancer and magnesium, which helps lower high blood pressure and reduce the frequency of migraines

Oregano – its antibacterial properties can help prevent infection, and anti-inflammatory properties help reduce arthritis symptoms. It is also a good source of fiber and a variety of nutrients

Rosemary – warming herb in Chinese medicine, high in antioxidants, also soothing to the stomach and helps relax muscles

Turmeric – another anti-inflammatory spice that can protect against colon and prostate cancers, inflammatory bowel disease, and can help people suffering from cystic fibrosis

There are many other spices and herbs with which you can experiment.

One simple step to overcome a number one fear

inspiration, mindset, tips thursdays, Uncategorized

Date 10th Sep 2009   Comments No Comments »

I’m a professional public speaker, but I wasn’t born this way – far from it, in fact. It took a long time for me to get there, mostly because of this one thing I wasn’t doing.

I resisted my fear for a long time. It’s not easy to face it, but just by doing so you can start moving through it. Sometimes, it takes acceptance of what is just to move forward in life. You don’t like the present situation – whether it’s a fear of public speaking, losses you have suffered, the number you get when you step on the scale, the people who have angered you, or anything that you don’t want. Resisting it will only keep you stuck where you are.

In her book, Feel the Fear . . . and Do It Anyway (r), Susan Jeffers talks about the benefits of saying yes to your universe:

Saying yes means letting go of resistance and letting in the possibilities that our universe offers in new ways of seeing the world. It means to relax bodily and calmly survey the situation, thereby reducing upset and anxiety. Aside from the emotional benefits, the physical benefits are enormous. Conversely, saying no means to be a victim… Saying no means to block, to fight, to resist opportunities for growth and challenge. Saying no creates tension, exhaustion, wasted expenditure of energy, emotional upheaval – or, worse, it creates apathy. “I can’t cope. I can’t go on. There is no hope.” The truth of the matter is that saying yes is our only hope.

Saying yes means getting up and acting on your belief that you can create meaning and purpose in whatever life hands you.

My fear of public speaking kept me hiding in the back in classes, praying that the teacher wouldn’t call on me. I made it all the way through high school and college this way.

Because I was so afraid to speak in front of people, I found myself missing out on things that I wanted to do. I am a writer, and I wanted more people to hear my work, but I would have died if I had read anything in front of people. Making speeches at special occasions, like weddings – that was automatically out. It also held me back in my career – I was afraid to speak or present my work in meetings. And yet, I kept resisting it.

Finally I couldn’t take it anymore – I said yes to the universe and accepted my fear so that I could overcome it.

I started practicing by going to Toastmasters and learning how to give speeches to an audience. Sometimes I did well – other times I bombed. I remember a humorous speech contest that I participated in and utterly failed – there was nothing funny about my speech. But I survived and got though it. And though I lost, I knew that I had overcome something that had been weighing on me for a long time.

Even though I know that my fear around public speaking will probably never totally go away, I can still say yes to it and do something positive about the fear – and be open to new possibilities.
