Why go gluten free?

December 15th, 2009 · diet, gluten free

Even though I tested negative for celiac disease, I’ve been eating a gluten free diet for a few months now. I realized something a while ago – gluten and wheat just don’t work for me like they work for most people. I get bloated and puffy, and I don’t digest it very well. I seem to retain more water, get more stuffed up and feel more tired when I eat it. I also discovered that gluten intolerance is linked to thyroid disorders and skin conditions like eczema – both of which I have had in the past.

I actually discovered this fact when I did my first seasonal cleanse. It required that I take out wheat and a number of other things that I usually eat – dairy, meat, coffee, alcohol, sugar, refined grain and white foods. Instead, I ate a clean diet of leafy greens, veggies, fruits, beans, whole grains, soups, and teas. It felt like my first time swimming downstream – like I had given up all of these struggles with things that didn’t work for me that I didn’t even realize weren’t working until I stopped.

I noticed a lot of things. I was much more calm and present after cleansing. I slept much better. I could breathe easily. I went without my usual seasonal allergies that year. I lost all my cravings for sweets, junk food, overly fatty food and salty food. I lost weight easily. I was more focused and able to get more things done. The rollercoaster ride of emotions caused by too much sugar, caffeine, and refined foods had ended. It was amazing.

The hardest thing about admitting that something doesn’t work for you is actually admitting it so that you can make the change in your diet that will work. But it’s so worth it. I speak from experience. If you suspect your food isn’t working for you, I’d love to speak with you. I know many simple ways you can start transitioning the way you eat so that you still get to enjoy foods that you love but feel a lot better when you eat. Contact me for an initial consultation.

Feel good now

December 14th, 2009 · happiness, inspiration, mindset

Nothing is more important than that I feel good.

Don’t do anything that you don’t really want to do. Keep yourself in a place of feeling good. Reach for the thought that feels better – and watch what happens.

- Abraham Hicks

Feeling good is the main part of the Law of Attraction. If you’re in a state of good feeling, you’ll naturally attract more of what you want into your life. That is why they say that nothing is more important than feeling good.

What can you do today for yourself that will put you in that feeling good state?

Get moving

December 10th, 2009 · exercise, fun, inspiration, self care

Feeling a little tired and sluggish but don’t want to do your usual workout? Doing any sort of movement can help. Even if you’re just taking a walk, cleaning the house or stretching, it’s better than if you just sit there feeling gross.

Or do something totally out of your ordinary routine. Last night I went to a birthday party downtown where they had a DJ spinning awesome dance music – and I rocked out. So much more fun than doing my usual running and strength training routine. And I know I got a good workout because I broke a sweat, and felt totally energized yet tired afterwards.

Make your movement fun, and you’re much more likely to do it. What kind of movement makes you feel awesome?

From Zen Habits, here are 48 ideas on fun exercises

Each weekday in December I’ll be posting a new tip of the day to help you live a delicious life. If you like my tips, let me know in the comments!

Keep in touch

December 9th, 2009 · happiness, inspiration, relationships, self care

We live in an increasingly solitary world. We may be connected through facebook, twitter, linked in, e-mail, texting, and any number of digital social ways. But there’s an increasing sense of lonliness among people.

As humans, we’re social animals. We like being around other people. We like talking to each other and interacting one on one. (Well, most of us do.)

What to do? Keep in touch with people. Instead of liking something someone says on facebook, why not connect with them in person?

Pick up the phone and make a date to meet up. Write an old-fashioned snail mail note by hand with a pen. Sure, sounds antiquated – but do you know how much people appreciate it when you keep in touch with them in a personal way? It makes them feel special – which will make you feel special, too.

Keep in touch with me – leave me a message here. I will definitely respond.  :-)

Be a butterfly

December 9th, 2009 · inspiration

You have within you the power to change the world.

My coach gave me a great, little book called The Butterfly Effect (How Your Life Matters). It came at the right time – it was one of those days that I was feeling ineffective.

Reading this book, I realized how off my thinking was going. It talks about the effects that one person can have on the world. Seemingly small, subtle interactions with people can have a great impact on them and spur them to greatness. While I can only guess how I’ve helped people change, I can think of a few people who have changed my life.

In grade school, I was a shy, sensitive kid, and scared to speak up in class. I was so nervous that I would get spontaneous nosebleeds in the middle of class, and have to go to the nurse’s office.

Sixth grade was tough. I was in my prime awkward stage, and to make matters worse, I had scoliosis and had to wear a back brace. I bet you can imagine how popular I was back then. I just about died when I heard that certain boys would never want to go out with someone who wore a brace.

My teacher, Mr. Phillips, was one of the first people who really encouraged me. He praised my writing, and urged me to participate in class – but not in a scary way. He made me feel like I was the smart person I really was, but didn’t feel like I was at the time. I may have even started to raise my hand.

I’ve been a writer ever since – I’m a professional writer as well as a coach. And in the early days when I started writing, I always remembered the encouragement that I got from people like Mr. Phillips – the people who believed in my abilities and encouraged me to develop them.

Your actions matter more than you realize. You can have a great impact on others. How can you be a butterfly for someone else?

How to avoid insomnia

December 7th, 2009 · self care

Last night I woke up at 3:30 am – and couldn’t get back to sleep. I tried, really. But I had too much on my mind. So I got up at 4 am and started working on some things quietly in my office.I knew I would be tired, but I have ways of handling it.

I used to have insomnia on a regular basis. While part of it was a caffeine problem, another aspect was definitely my tendency to stress out big time about small (and sometimes not so small) things.

I learned that not sleeping was not the end of the world. You can usually catch up the next day if you let yourself, and most of the time it won’t hurt you… too much.

If you find yourself not sleeping, here are a few things you can do:

1 – Don’t panic. The more you worry, the worse your insomnia will be. Cover up the clock, try to relax.

2 – Deep breathing and meditation – these can help you relax, and sometimes you’ll even fall back asleep. Try tensing and relaxing each part of your body separately, starting with the feet and working your way up to your head.

3 – Get bored – read something that would normally put you to sleep. The dictonary, a user manual or a dry research report work well. No mystery novels or romances, please – too exciting.

4 – If stress keeps you from sleeping, make a to-do list before you go to bed. That way, you won’t have to worry about the next day’s must do tasks – they’re on your list.

5 – Make your bedroom a quiet place – no TVs, electronics or computers. Reserve this room for only sleeping and sex. Make sure it is sufficiently dark and cool enough to fall asleep easily.

If you still can’t sleep, cut out caffeine and get to bed at a normal sleeping hour. Caffeine withdrawal may be painful, but it will likely get you back on track faster than anything else.

Trust your instincts

December 4th, 2009 · fun, happiness, inspiration, mindset, self care

Crossroads

Have you been putting your dreams off for a more convenient time? Feel like you’re not ready to move forward?

Try something new – trust yourself and your instincts. You have dreams for a reason. It’s time to validate them and go for them – life is too short not to. I got this quote from a friend today and had to share it:

What direction you go in the cross-roads of life is up to you! Press on the gas and drive baby drive!

The Universe has got your back and there are no speeding tickets on the road to success!
