3 myths of healthy eating

diet, magnificent mondays, news

Date 7th Mar 2011   Comments No Comments »

Think you know the difference between healthy eating myths and reality? You just might, though many people are walking around misinformed. It’s not their fault – so much misinformation is out there on purpose so that you’ll buy certain products and think you’re doing the right thing for your body. BUT the very thing that you’re eating that you think will help could be causing the problem.

I was on Joshua Margolis’ Mind Over Matter radio show today dispelling a few myths. You can listen to the whole show on Talking Alternative Radio.

Here are a couple of common myths:

Fat makes you fat

This is part of the low-fat myth that has Americans getting fatter than ever. We’ve been living under the assumption that cutting fat and eating more carbohydrates will make you thin. Obviously that hasn’t worked out so well since obesity rates are higher than ever for both adults and children.

Sugar and processed carbs make you fat. Many processed foods also use bad fats, the ones that harden your arteries and cause inflammation, which leads to just about every disease imaginable. And this is what we’ve been told is good for us!

Healthy fats helps manage your blood sugar levels, keeping your insulin from spiking when you eat carbohydrates. Fat provides energy, and it is essential in helping in the digestive process. For example, healthy fat with vegetables (think olive oil on salad) helps digest and assimilate the vitamins and nutrients from the plants into your system.

Cutting the healthy fats cuts out vital nutrients – and makes you feel less satisfied. Low fat products usually contain unhealthy fats and added sugar to make them taste better. You would feel more satisfied and eat less if you just ate the full-fat, whole version of the foods that you eat instead of eating processed, sugared products.

A calorie is a calorie

Clearly this isn’t true. You can watch your calories and lose weight, but you won’t have optimal energy – and your body won’t work as well if you’re eating 1200 calories of cake vs. 1200 calories of fruits and vegetables.

Calories are a simple way to measure, but they don’t tell the whole story. It’s the quality of the food that’s important – you can be malnourished and overweight because you’re not feeding your body a variety of vitamins, minerals, healthy carbohydrates proteins and fats.

Milk does a body good

This is a marketing slogan. Low-fat milk is marketed as a health food that promotes weight loss, but it doesn’t actually help you lose weight.  In a weight loss study, out of 49 clinical trials, 41 showed no effects of diary or calcium on weight, two showed an increase in body weight with a dairy regimen, and one showed a lower rate of weight gain. Only five showed weight loss – and not necessarily caused by dairy consumption.

Did you know that farmers feed pigs low-fat milk so that they can gain weight faster? And mother’s milk is a food that’s given to babies to help them grow and put on weight quickly.

What do you think it will do for you?

Another point to consider – many people have an intolerance for dairy and don’t even know it.  Dairy intolerances cause indigestion and bloating, and interfere with digestive process. If you’ve noticed that you feel bloated or gassy after drinking milk or eating ice cream, I urge you to try a dairy experiment – cut the dairy out for a few weeks. See how you feel. When you’re ready, reintroduce a little bit and then see what happens. You might find that life is better without dairy.

Low-fat milk is also a processed food – i.e. it’s not whole and doesn’t have all the nutrients in it that whole milk contains. Pasteurization kills most of the healthy bacteria in raw milk, leaving behind a product that is nutritionally inferior. Finding real milk is difficult, but if you can, try it sometime and taste the difference. Then also notice how you feel after eating it. Some people can eat real milk but can’t tolerate processed, pasteurized milk.

Losing It with Jillian

exercise, inspiration, mindset

Date 9th Jun 2010   Comments No Comments »

I watched Losing It with Jillian last night. She’s one tough trainer, but some people need that kind of coaching. What I like about her style is how she’s able to quickly break through people’s barriers by pushing the right buttons to get them to talk. Because half of what keeps people who are really stuck and unable to get motivated when they’re overweight has to do with burying feelings.

It seems like it’s so much easier to eat over your emotions instead of dealing with them. Until it’s not. And all of the people featured on the show have already hit their own personal “bottom” in order to reach out and call for help. And yet, even when they have Jillian up in their faces, they are overcome with fear and want to run away.

I’m not a huge fan of reality-style shows, but I’m glad that more of these nutrition and weight loss shows are on. I find it really inspiring to see people who are finally proving to themselves that they can overcome their perceived limits, breaking down false barriers that were holding them back from really living.

Five steps to cleaning out your diet

cleanse, diet, food

Date 12th Apr 2010   Comments No Comments »

I’m in the middle of my first April cleanse class, and I feel amazing. I’m feeling lighter and more energized, though I’ve also noticed that I had a couple of days of allergies.

One thing many people ask me about cleansing is whether they will be hungry. I always recommend to people that they stick with the meals and portions that I suggest, but that if they’re more active than average, they adjust the amount of food to meet their own needs.

Many people also mistake a cleanse for a fast. They think that it’s all juice or water – not so. You don’t have to cut out all food to have a good cleanse and get healthy. Depending on your own constitution, you might opt for a day of juicing – but most people shouldn’t juice for more than a couple of days. It all depends on how well your body can handle not eating.

Want to start cleaning your diet before cleansing? Here are my top five tips on getting started:

1 – Eliminate caffeine – the hardest for most people. Caffeine is a legal psychoactive drug that gives you the false energy and subsequent crash. By cutting it out, your physical and emotional energy will become more even and stronger overall

2 – Eliminate sugar – a national addiction, sugar is in just about every food that you can imagine, and even some you can’t. Sugar also has psychoactive properties and use of it is attributed to over 100 different kinds of ailments. Getting it out of your diet alone may be enough to make you feel 100% better for many aches and pains.

3 – Cut out the dairy – Milk is made to fatten up baby cows. It’s not meant for consumption by adult humans. Yet we still consume tons of dairy in milk, cheese, ice cream, yogurt and other products. There are plenty of other sources of calcium out there, and you don’t reallyneed dairy. I’ve had many clients cut dairy out of their diets, and tell me that they suddenly can breathe better and don’t have as many allergies.

4 – Ditch the wheat – it is one of the most overused grains in our diet. The problem is that it has become so pervasive that many people have a sensitivity due to overexposure. Others are walking around suffering from undiagnosed cases of Celiac Sprue, an allergy to wheat. If you give this up and discover you’re suddenly less bloated, itchy and have better moods, it might be wise to keep it out all together.

5 – Ban the meat – As Americans, we over consume our proteins. It’s important to have enough protein to sustain muscle mass and get healthy amino acids, but we really overdo the meat. Eating too much meat causes acidity in the body – which is the catalyst for many different diseases. Getting the heavier, building meats like beef, lamb, pork, and chicken out of your diet before cleansing can help you overcome acidity and balance your hormones.

How do I lose weight fast?

diet, food

Date 23rd Jun 2009   Comments No Comments »

Everyone wants to lose weight fast. What’s the best way to do it?

A reader asked me this question the other day:

How can I lose weight quickly? I was thinking about going on a fast or an oatmeal diet. Would either one of those help?

Yes, you’ll most likely lose weight. But if you go back to your old eating habits (very likely), your weight loss definitely won’t last. And you may end up gaining back more than you lost in the first place. So it works in the short term, but it’s more like a weight gaining strategy for the long term.

Here are my top three worst ways to lose weight

Fasting – If you fast for a short time, you’ll definitely lose weight. And you may even feel better. But the deprivation frequently triggers over eating afterward – mentally, you think it’s ok to reward yourself for your good work and since you’ve been on a calorie deficit, you figure it won’t hurt anyway. But all it does is put you on a path of yo-yo dieting – going from starving to overeating and back again – which can mess with your metabolism and your overall health.

Mono-diet – This is eating one food only for a certain amount of time. The oatmeal diet would fall in the mono-diet category. There are endless versions of mono diets – the cabbage soup diet, the grapefruit diet, etc. The problem with mono-dieting is that your body gets only certain nutrients and is missing a lot of other essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and fats. You will lose weight, but you’ll probably fall off the wagon due to sheer boredom of eating the same thing day in and day out. I will sometimes recommend a mono-diet for a cleanse, but that is part of a bigger plan to change your overall eating habits. If you’re just randomly cutting out all but one food without any sort of strategy, you will eventually go back to your old habits.

Food poisoning – This is one of the worst things you can do to yourself. Yes, I know some people who have knowingly and willingly given themselves food poisoning by eating food that’s a little off or moldy just so that they will lose their appetite and stop eating for a few days. This is a dangerous and foolish method that should never be considered. According to WebMD, Food poisoning symptoms can range from mild indigestion to severe dehydration and bloody diarrhea. Depending on the type of infection, you can even die as a result of food poisoning. Any diet that can result in death is a bad idea, so don’t do it.

The best way to lose weight is to change your habits and allow your body to naturally drop pounds over time. If you want to learn how to do this in a more sane, sustainable way, contact me.

Spring into Summer with a Cleanse

food, recipes, self care

Date 21st Apr 2008   Comments 2 Comments »

Spring has sprung. Finally things are starting to bloom, weather is warming up, and it’s time for some spring cleaning. Besides cleaning out old things and clothes from your home that no longer fit or that you enjoy, you can also do a holistic spring cleanse for your body, mind and lifestyle.

A dietary cleanse is a good idea in the spring after a winter of eating heartier foods. It’s a gentle way to start eating lighter and shed any winter weight that may have accumulated over the past few months. And it’s a great way to get ready for the warmer weather in late spring and summer.

You can cleanse for a few days or a couple of weeks, depending on the condition of your health and what works for your lifestyle. There are many different ways to do a food cleanse. Some people will cut back on foods that cause accumulation – dairy, meats, refined carbohydrates – and add in lighter leafy greens, fresh veggies and fruit. Some people go vegetarian for a short while, cutting out all animal products. And some do a juice cleanse and fast.

Some of the benefits you can get from it may include:

  • Increased energy
  • Clearer skin and shiny eyes
  • Losing a habit like caffeine addiction
  • Fresher breath
  • Better sleep
  • Weight loss

All You Can Eat Diet: Why Whole Foods Are Better

food, self care

Date 3rd Jan 2008   Comments 1 Comment »

I just saw this post about the “all you can eat diet” in the blogosphere. While I was traveling in Mexico for two weeks in December, I did go on this diet. It was delicious, and actually yes, I did lose weight.

I noticed that while there is processed food in Mexico, the restaurants that we ate at were serving dishes that contained almost only whole foods. Tortillas are made fresh daily from ground up corn – no preservatives to keep them shelf stable. Chickens run freely – they eat bugs and worms and other things that Chickens should eat. Sauces were made with lots of spices, and beans were most likely cooked with unprocessed lard. While white rice was served sometimes, we were more likely to find hot tortillas than processed grains on our plates.

I ate whenever I was hungry, but sometimes we were too busy exploring to eat – so I might have skipped a meal  or two. It didn’t matter anyway, because I would make up for it at the next meal. But still, I lost weight and felt good most of the time. I really think it was because we had so few processed foods on our trip.

I do try to keep the processed foods out of my diet, but when I eat out, I don’t always know what I’m getting. A lot of times, restaurants substitute cheaper ingredients to add to the bottom line, which adds to your waistline quicker than you’d imagine.

If you really want to change your life, cut out as many processed foods as you can. See how you feel after a couple of weeks. What has changed for you?

200 hamburgers to 213 pounds

food

Date 19th Oct 2007   Comments 4 Comments »

A few months ago, Johan Groundstroem from Sweden got on the scale and was disturbed by what he saw. So disturbed that he decided to go on a diet. But not an ordinary diet – a hamburger diet.

You see, he wasn’t interested in eating all that health food like “algae soup and seaweed stew.” He wanted to eat food that he enjoyed. So he contacted the Swedish hamburger chain Max and asked for sponsorship. They agreed, and Johan became the Jared of Sweden.

Now 31 kilos (68.3 pounds) lighter, achieved in just 100 days, Johan has exceeded his weight loss goal of 20 kilos in 90 days. He’s shared his story on his blog, Minimize Me – and garnered media attention for it.

Now, you don’t have to give up your favorite foods to lose weight, but you do need to create a plan and stick to it. Johan’s suggestions:

1. Adopt a target and a menu – STICK TO IT AND DON’T CHEAT – EVER!

2. Motivation – Who could possibly backtrack on a weight-loss programme if they have nailed their colours to the mast on a website? In my case, it attracted a lot of attention and I’ve had to promise not to go over 100 kg again!

3. The food – Eat something you really like! Forget the algae soup and seaweed stew! I will continue to eat hamburgers, but with a side order of salad, water or milk instead. The difference is that I will now have to start paying for my hamburgers, isn’t that right Alexandra (wink wink).

4. Ask someone for help – A friend, a dietician, a personal trainer. Find a weight-loss pal! I have made lots of new contacts via my site, and these have meant an awful lot to me! Lise, you are a star – better motivation is hard to find!
